New trailer footage for Mortal Kombat shows new fight scenes for Goro, Cole Young Sub-Zero, Sonya, and more. The upcoming film has teased plenty of violent martial arts action, staying true to the brutal style that has made the video game franchise famous. Mortal Kombat is scheduled to premiere on April 16, simultaneously in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.

From what’s been revealed so far, it seems like the new Mortal Kombat movie follows the basic beats of the original arcade game and the 1995 live-action film. That means that most of the action will likely occur within the confines of the eponymous tournament, where representatives from Earthrealm and the evil Outworld battle or the fate of the world. The MK reboot has assembled an extensive roster of fighters on both sides, pitting classic protagonists like Liu Kang, Jax, and Kung Lao against fierce opponents like Sub-Zero, Mileena, and Kabal.

Two new Mortal Kombat TV spots, compiled and reposted to YouTube by LaganezeTV, have shown a ton of previously unseen footage for the upcoming film. Among the new bits are better looks at MK’s CGI Goro, some battle shots of Cole Young in his armored combat suit, more dialogue describing the lore of the movie, and a close-up of Liu Kang’s iconic dragon fatality. It’s more of the same high-style action that the film has been boasting of for months, building more anticipation just a few weeks before its release.

The new Mortal Kombat trailer footage adds some interesting wrinkles to what we know about the film's story. There’s a scene of Kano and Liu Kang sparring, with the former making a quip about getting his own “superpowers” after Liu Kang seems to hit him with a fire blast. That shot is followed up by one of Kano’s laser eye, possibly dropping hints that the longtime villain will revert to his old ways at some point in the movie.

Cole Young and Sub-Zero are also shown fighting in the new TV spots, which was alluded to in a past trailer when Cole faced the ice ninja alongside Scorpion. The new footage gives glimpses of a brutal duel between the duel, which seemed inevitable since the early reveal that Sub-Zero is hunting Cole at the start of the movie. All in all, the new footage is just another reason for both new and old fans to get excited for the long-awaited big-screen return of Mortal Kombat.
