Scorpion’s new theme music for the Mortal Kombat reboot has been released, and it includes a fun homage to the iconic theme of the 1995 film. Hiroyuki Sanada will play the Netherrealm warrior in the new movie, joining a cast that also includes Lewis Tan, Ludi Lin, Joe Taslim, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, and Max Huang. Mortal Kombat is set to release on April 23, simultaneously in theaters and for streaming on HBO Max.

Since the very first Mortal Kombat arcade game, Scorpion has been one of the series’ most popular and recognizable characters. Though he’s been played as both a hero and a villain at different points in the franchise, the reboot’s version of Scorpion looks like he’ll be on the side of the good guys. The rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero is central to the film, and the trailers have promised some exciting showdowns between the two. Scorpion will wield a number of his signature moves in the reboot as well, including his famous kunai with chain.

Mortal Kombat’s new Scorpion theme has now been released via IGN. The music starts with a great homage to the popular techno theme song from the 1995 Mortal Kombat film, which is sure to be fun for longtime fans. The rest of the track is exciting and very high-energy, foreshadowing some of the brutal battles Scorpion will be a part of in the film. Listen to Scorpion’s new theme music below:

It’s been heavily hinted that Lewis Tan’s Cole Young character is tied to Scorpion in some way. One trailer shot appears to show Cole having a vision of Scorpion’s face, startling him severely. Another shot shows Scorpion and Cole teaming up against Sub-Zero in a two-on-one fight. It’s possible that Cole is a descendant of Scorpion, which would also explain why Sub-Zero tries to kill him from the start of the movie.

Whatever Scorpion’s connection is to Cole, it’s exciting to see him get such a central spotlight in Mortal Kombat. Scorpion and Sub-Zero have been the faces of the franchise for years, and it's only right that the reboot puts their story at its core. With rumors of a Mortal Kombat cinematic universe being built if the new film succeeds, fans may be getting a lot more of Sanada’s Scorpion in the future. Regardless, his fights in the reboot look like they should be lots of fun to watch. Mortal Kombat releases on April 23.
