NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat 11 was released a little over a year ago in 2019, but the game's recent Aftermath DLC has only mounted anticipation of the release of Mortal Kombat 12. Since MK11 was one of the most successful games of last year, players likely expect its sequel to also exceed expectations.

There is still very little known about when NetherRealm Studios will begin gearing up to launch MK12, or what new improvements and additions players can expect. However, speculation suggests gamers will have to wait a few more years for the release of Mortal Kombat 12, with only a new live-action movie version of Mortal Kombat, set to arrive in 2021, to hold them over.

Unfortunately, NetherRealm has yet to officially confirm when it anticipates Mortal Kombat 12 will be released. The studio has also not provided any details about where the game’s storyline will pick up from, or what characters will (or will not) make a return. With that being said, what the studio has hinted about regarding their Mortal Kombat video game franchise means fans will definitely see a new entry eventually, it just may not be anytime soon..

When To Expect Mortal Kombat 12

Recently, Mortal Kombat games have been coming out every four years. Mortal Kombat 11 released in 2019, whereas Mortal Kombat X debuted in 2015 and Mortal Kombat was released in 2011. Prior to that, games in the franchise came out slightly more regularly, with there being an average of one to two years between games. NetherRealm's recent consistency, however, suggests that a 2023 release for the next Mortal Kombat game is the most likely answer.

If this holds true, players still have a little under three years to wait. A 2023 release means the game will likely only be available on next-gen consoles, such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Though they’ve released little to no details about MK12, Ed Boon, the creative director at NetherRealm Studios as well as the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, seemingly confirmed the studio was moving ahead with the newest installment. In fact, Boon implied there are many more Mortal Kombat games to come in the future, provided the fans continue to respond positively.

Mortal Kombat has become like a staple thing, almost Marvel-like. You don’t expect the last Marvel movie to ever come out, they’re just gonna keep coming,” Boon said in a Summer Game Fest stream last month, MXDWN reports. “Even though we’ve been able to scratch other itches, you know doing Injustice games and stuff, and we have other stuff in the oven, but it’s always nice to do the Mortal Kombat games.” Unfortunately, Boon didn’t elaborate on the status of these Mortal Kombat projects, including whether MK12 is just one of many Mortal Kombat games in the works.

It appears it will be at least another three years before Mortal Kombat 12 releases, but from the sounds of it, NetherRealm Studios has a lot of exciting things in the works that fans of the franchise can look forward to.
