The rumored Mortal Kombat 12 could be bringing back the fan-favorite Konquest mode, at least according to series co-creator Ed Boon. Earlier this week, Boon sat down for an AMA session on social media to answer questions from fans. One of these players asked about NetherRealm’s next big fighting game project, to which Boon replied that it could be either Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12.

While Ed Boon didn’t give a definitive answer about which one this mystery project might be, he also hinted that the next Mortal Kombat title could feature the return of a popular game mode, in the same AMA session where Boon gave his update on Injustice 3 and Mortal Kombat 12. One of the users who posted a question to Ed Boon's Twitter account asked if NetherRealm is considering a remaster of 2004’s Mortal Kombat: Deception, as reported by ComicBook. Boon answered that this probably won’t happen, but he instead suggested that a new Konquest mode would be more likely.

Mortal Kombat’s Single-Player Konquest Mode Could Return

A screenshot from Mortal Kombat Deception's Konquest mode.

Konquest was a single-player mode that allowed players to practice the various moves and combos of Mortal Kombat characters and unlock special bonuses. It was first introduced in 2002’s Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, where it functioned as a series of standalone missions featuring the game’s full roster. In Mortal Kombat: Deception, Konquest was revamped into a more RPG-style experience in which players took control of a new character named Shujinko as he traveled across the realms in search of the mystical Kamidogu relics. 2006’s massive Mortal Kombat: Armageddon changed Konquest’s format once more into an adventure game-like style and followed yet another new character named Taven, who journeyed across EarthRelam to defeat the fiery ninja Blaze. This would be the last time that Konquest was featured, as the mode was completely absent from NetherRealm’s recent Mortal Kombat reboot trilogy.

While it still hasn’t been confirmed what exactly NetherRealm’s next fighting game will be, Ed Boon’s recent tease of Konquest mode returning to Mortal Kombat seems to suggest that it will be Mortal Kombat 12 rather than Injustice 3. His willingness to talk about NetherRealm’s next project after remaining tight-lipped on the subject over the past couple of years also implies that it could be officially announced soon - with a great opportunity coming up in the form of December’s newly-announced Game Awards 2022 livestream. However, it’s just as likely that Boon is simply teasing fans on social media, as he has been known to do from time to time.

If Mortal Kombat 12 is indeed on the horizon, then the popular Konquest mode could be reintroduced - at least according to Boon’s latest social media hint. Konquest has taken on many different forms in the three games it was previously featured in, so it’s anyone’s guess what the mode could be like if it does return in Mortal Kombat 12 - be that the RPG style of Deception’s version, the adventure format of Armageddon’s take, or something new entirely.
