Actor Keith David has signed on to provide the voice for Spawn in Mortal Kombat 11's Kombat Pack DLC. Upon its release in April 2019, Mortal Kombat 11 won hearts and minds with its over-the-top violence, competitive balance, and deep customization. It's considered by many to be one of the best entries in the decades-old series, and quickly became the best-selling game of the year.
Like previous MK games (and Netherrealm's sister series, Injustice) before it, Mortal Kombat 11 is getting additional fighters in the form of post-launch downloadable content. The first two characters, Shang Tsung and Nightwolf, are already out, but the remaining four fighters – Sindel, Terminator, Joker, and Spawn – have not had release dates announced yet.
While fans eagerly await a release announcement for the DLC fighters, news continues to trickle out about the Kombat Pack. Some were dismayed when it was revealed Arnold Schwarzenegger is not voicing his MK11 character, but a similar fate will not befall Spawn. Keith David has officially signed on to voice the iconic comic book antihero, reprising his role from the HBO animated adaptation of the seminal 1990s Image Comics stories. David confirmed the news himself, via Twitter:
Spawn is one of the most famous comic book heroes of the 1990s, and remains one of the few characters from that "dark and edgy" phase of the industry that's still relevant today, to the point where creator Todd McFarlane is working on a new movie version starring Jamie Foxx. It's especially heartening to learn of David's return to the role, since the animated series, which ran for three seasons on HBO, is fondly remembered as a fantastic comic book adaptation, and an excellent adult animated series on its own merits.
Netherrealm Studios hasn't always been able to secure top Hollywood talent for its DLC guest characters (see the aforementioned Terminator, as well as Freddy Kruger from Mortal Kombat 9), but they are clearly making an effort this time around. Even though Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't lending his voice to his character, it's still a big deal that he's allowing his likeness to be used. Furthermore, if the rumors are true, maybe fans will get to see Bruce Campbell reprise his role of Ash Williams for the possible Evil Dead DLC which may or may not eventually make its way to Mortal Kombat 11. Spawn, The Terminator, and the rest of the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 DLC are currently without a release date, but fans surely won't have to wait too long before these new challengers enter the ring and show off their Fatalities.
