Netherrealm Studios revealed gameplay footage of Mortal Kombat 11's newest DLC fighter, Spawn, today during the Final Kombat 2020 livestream. Like many other live events currently happening around the globe, Final Kombat 2020 neglected to include a studio audience at the tournament due to worries about the spread of the COVID-19 strain of coronavirus, which recently also caused the cancellation of SXSW in Austin, Texas.

Created by Todd McFarlane, Spawn tells the story of a police officer who was killed and sent to hell only to return to Earth in order to do the devil's bidding. From a series of comic books, to a movie adaptation of Spawn written by the creator of Wrong Turn, to early 1990's platformer game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Spawn has proven to be a popular character both on and off the screen. Now with a new movie adaptation in the works and his upcoming appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 set to occur soon, a whole new generation will soon be introduced to Al Simmons' hellish power.

Now, thanks to a video shown during Netherrealm Studios Mortal Kombat 11 Final Kombat 2020 Esports tournament, players finally have an idea of how Spawn's newest video game version will play. The demon-powered superhuman, voiced here by Keith David, utilizes his classic ethereal chains, deadly cape, and demonic powers in order to decimate opponents. Check out the gameplay trailer, obviously NSFW, via Mortal Kombat's Twitter below:

Like most Mortal Kombat 11 character reveal videos, this gameplay trailer revealed one of the new fighter's finishing moves, and Spawn's new fatality is just as gruesome as players expected it to be. As visible in the trailer above, Spawn rips the skin from his opponent before wrapping his cape around them and completely disemboweling the helpless character. It's brutal, gory, and fits right in with both Todd McFarlane's original creation and Mortal Kombat in general.

Spawn isn't the first comic book character to arrive in the Mortal Kombat series, although he is the first from Todd McFarlane's library. Previously, the company has partnered with DC Comics to produce both Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and the Injustice series of fighting games, which took the framework of the Mortal Kombat series and applied it to characters like Batman and Martian Manhunter. Clearly, the team at Netherrealm has a fascination with comic books, and fans can only hope that one day a Mortal Kombat 11 versus Injustice versus Marvel vs. Capcom game will arrive.
