Summary

  • Fire God Liu Kang plays a significant role in Mortal Kombat 1's campaign as Shang Tsung's main opponent, and his new powers allow him to control time and execute attacks with mystical dragon-like figures.
  • Kung Lao, a peaceful farmer in the New Era, will likely return to his fighting style with his bladed hat once Shang Tsung comes back, and his role as either Liu Kang's apprentice or a previous incarnation is uncertain.
  • Raiden, now bereft of his heavenly powers, returns as a regular human warrior and will use everything within his reach to fight Shang Tsung, possibly regaining his electrical powers during the game.

Developer NetherRealm Studios has been gradually revealing confirmed characters for Mortal Kombat 1, and the initial roster of playable heroes and villains will likely get veteran players excited. The new fighting game is a direct sequel to the events in Mortal Kombat 11, and at the same time, a reboot of the Mortal Kombat timeline, as the newly anointed Fire God, Liu Kang, is capable of controlling time itself – in the previous game, he defeated the Keeper of Time, Kronika.

In the new game, Liu Kang seeks to bring forth an era of peace and prosperity. Nevertheless, his plans will be cut short by the return of Shang Tsung. In Mortal Kombat 1’s reveal trailer, the sorcerer is seen taking the lives of many well-known characters, all of which have been confirmed for the upcoming game as playable. It is still unknown if they will all be the main characters in Mortal Kombat 1, as the game will also introduce the Kameo system.

20 Fire God Liu Kang

Mortal Kombat 1's Fire God Liu Kang poses in front of the franchise's logo.

Liu Kang is one of the confirmed characters in Mortal Kombat 1 and should play a big part in the campaign’s developments. He is Shang Tsung’s main opponent, and will likely be the initial barrier the villain faces, as Liu Kang is a keeper of peace. The Fire God is also featured on the game’s cover, which gives further importance to his role in the game.

As a Fire God and not only a mere combatant, Liu Kang will likely have a totally renewed skill set in Mortal Kombat 1. While he will likely still use martial arts in his fights, he can now rely on mystical powers – the reveal trailer even shows him using his new powers to execute Shang Tsung with dragon-like figures.

19 Kung Lao

Mortal Kombat 1's Kung Lao wears a hat and has a serious expression on his face.

In Fire God Liu Kang’s New Era, Kung Lao is one of the confirmed characters in Mortal Kombat 1. The hero is seen leading a peaceful life as a farmer in the countryside before Shang Tsung’s return and has exchanged his mortal hat for one without a blade. That will probably change once the game begins, as his bladed hat is the hallmark of his entire fighting style.

It is uncertain if this will be the Great Kung Lao, featured in Liu Kang’s ending in Mortal Kombat 11, or his previous incarnation. If it is the Great Kung Lao, he will likely be Liu Kang’s apprentice, as he was chosen by the Fire God as his Chosen Warrior. Of course, Liu Kang could have rebooted the universe even further, so the events in Mortal Kombat 11 are not as relevant in Mortal Kombat 1.

18 Raiden

Mortal Kombat 1's Raiden is sitting in a dark room with his hat on his head.

Sharing a simple farmer’s life in the countryside along Kung Lao is Raiden. The god is one of the confirmed characters for Mortal Kombat 1, as he appears in the game’s reveal trailer. The god of thunder seems to be bereft of his heavenly powers, however, which seems to indicate that his sacrifice to empower Liu Kang at the end of Mortal Kombat 11 was a permanent one.

Nevertheless, he seems to have returned as a regular human warrior, and will probably use all that is within his reach to fight against Shang Tsung. It is hard to imagine his reimagined skill set if he is truly no longer in control of his staple electrical powers, but he will likely go through some event that enables his abilities to come back, even if in a limited manner.

17 Scorpion

Scorpion’s return as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1 was somewhat inevitable, as the ninja is one of the most popular heroes in the franchise. He is shown in the reveal trailer, wielding his kunai-rope dart when Sub-Zero approaches him in a restaurant. He wears his classic yellow suit and golden half-mask, both of which built his visual identity.

Later on, he is seen having his throat slit and head impaled by Shang Tsung, as the sorcerer individually kills off all the heroes shown in the trailer. However, all these deaths will likely be reversed once Liu Kang resets a timeline to start an organized war against the villain. As such, Scorpion and his other allies will make a return.

16 Sub-Zero

Mortal Kombat 1's Sub-Zero stands in a dark room while wearing his blue outfit.

The other classic ninja that is confirmed as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1 is Sub-Zero. Of course, this is Kuai Liang and not Bi-Han. Sub-Zero is shown in the same restaurant scene as Scorpion, as they walk toward each other holding their weapons. Nevertheless, they appear to have made peace with each other in the New Era.

This peace may be short-lasting with Shang Tsung’s return, and the exact details of how they will be part of the larger plot have yet to be seen. Most of Sub-Zero’s skill set should remain intact, as his control over ice was not taken away at any point before the end of the previous Mortal Kombat game.

15 Kitana

A close-up on Kitana's face in Mortal Kombat 1. She wears a blue mask over her nose and mouth.

Princess Kitana, seemingly now the empress of Outworld despite the non-canonical ending in Mortal Kombat 11, is returning as a character in Mortal Kombat 1. The blue-vested warrior is seen riding a cart along with Mileena, in an area filled with people who are likely in the Outworld after Shao Kahn’s demise.

Kitana looks outside of her cart to see the populace and, moments later, steps outside to watch the eclipse that marks the return of Shang Tsung. Later on, she has her eyes gouged out by the villain, who comes to eliminate all the peaceful warriors.

14 Mileena

A close-up on Mileena's face in Mortal Kombat 1. She wears a pink mask over her nose and mouth.

As mentioned before, Kitana is sharing a cart with Mileena, which was confirmed as a character in Mortal Kombat 1’s reveal trailer. After not being playable with MK11’s initial release, the fan-favorite hero will likely be controllable with the new game’s launch, as opposed to her later addition as a DLC character in the previous title.

The character will wear her classic pink warrior suit and a pink mask, which occludes her monster-like mouth. Her exact role in the plot is unknown, as she is often portrayed as an antagonist – if she will return to her former sensibilities is still a mystery.

13 Shang Tsung

Shang Tsung emerges from a red fiery portal in Mortal Kombat 1.

Shang Tsung should be the game’s main villain, as he is the confirmed character in Mortal Kombat 1 responsible for the end of the peace in Liu Kang’s New Era. The sorcerer will come to visit the rest of the warriors that stood against him before, most likely with the intention of eliminating them.

The character is a smart one, so he will also probably try to recruit allies to his cause – perhaps Mileena and Scorpion, for instance. Shang Tsung will also likely be the cause of the return of other villains and the introduction of new ones. All players who pre-order Mortal Kombat 1 will receive him as a playable character.

12 Johnny Cage

Johnny Cage has been confirmed as a character in Mortal Kombat 1. The hero was originally speculated as one of the new Kameo Fighters, which is a system that will use secondary heroes to aid the main characters during fights.

Nevertheless, Johnny Cage has been confirmed as a main playable character in the first gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1. The video was revealed during the 2023 Summer Game Fest showcase.

11 Kenshi

Although Kenshi Takahashi was not confirmed during the original announcement trailer, he was later confirmed as one of the playable characters in Mortal Kombat 1. Kenshi was featured in the gameplay trailer shown during the Summer Game Fest showcase.

Kenshi has received a redesign and no longer wears his iconic blindfold, but his fighting style with a katana remains. It seems like he continues to use his telekinetic and psychokinetic powers to battle opponents. There is a scene in which Kenshi is using his traditional red outfit with a blindfold, though he quickly receives a Fatality kill.

10 Smoke

Mortal Kombat 1's Smoke appears coming out of a tornado while talking to Sub-Zero and Scorpion.

Smoke was confirmed as one of the new Mortal Kombat 1 characters during the Lin Kuei trailer, which shows him joining both Scorpion and Sub-Zero as an ally. He is treated as their sibling, even if he does not share blood with them.

9 Rain

Rain carries a staff and wears a hood and mask in a Mortal Kombat 1 cutscene.

Shown off initially during the Lin Kuei trailer, Rain was confirmed to be one of the returning characters in Mortal Kombat 1. Taking on what seems to be a more important role than his previous iterations, Rain will now challenge the ninja group, possibly making himself an ally to Shang Tsung.

8 Li Mei

Mortal Kombat 1's Li Mei talks during a cutscene.

Making a reappearance after Mortal Kombat X, Li Mei was confirmed to be one of the playable characters in Mortal Kombat 1. The classic fighter was shown off during the Umgadi trailer, revealed during San Diego Comic-Con 2023's Mortal Kombat 1 panel. The video shows that she was once the leader of the Umgadi, protectors of the royal family of Outworld, but left after the princess' father was killed.

7 Tanya

Mortal Kombat 1's Tanya looks fierce during a cutscene.

During the same trailer shown at SDCC, Tanya was confirmed as a character in Mortal Kombat 1. Still a member of the Umgadi, she issues a challenge against Li Mei. From the short gameplay footage shown in the video, Tanya will specialize in fighting at mid-range with her staff. She is keeping a secret about Princess Mileena's condition, which makes her transform into a Tarkata-like creature.

6 Baraka

Mortal Kombat 1's Baraka shows off his teeth during a cutscene.

Baraka is also confirmed to be a character in Mortal Kombat 1. In the SDCC trailer, he is seen having his blood extracted while the royal guard tries to find a cure for Mileena. Baraka and other Tarkatans are also afflicted by the disease that plagues the princess, though Baraka proposes an uprising to fight against the Outworld forces that oppress them.

5 Reptile

Mortal Kombat 1's Reptile is ready to fight against a character that is off-screen.

During the trailer revealed at EVO 2023, shared on the official Warner Bros. Games channel on YouTube, NetherRealm confirmed that Reptile is making his way back as a main fighter in Mortal Kombat 1. What is most notable about it is that he is in his human form this time. Some of his skills can temporarily transform him into his reptilian state.

4 Ashrah

Mortal Kombat 1's Ashrah talks.

The EVO 2023 trailer also confirmed that Ashrah is returning as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1. The demon of Netherrealm reveals she has purged most of the evil within her, which caused her demonic sisters to become furious.

3 Havik

Mortal Kombat 1's Havik is fighting against Ashrah.

The last fully playable character in Mortal Kombat 1 confirmed by the EVO 2023 trailer was Havik. The fighter, originally introduced in MK: Deception, is making his way back into the franchise. He is shown fighting Ashrah with the help of Sareena, which will return as a Kameo Fighter.

2 Confirmed Kameo Fighters

A few Kameo Fighter characters for Mortal Kombat 1 were confirmed with the first gameplay trailer. The characters that were shown aiding the main heroes in battle are all well-known heroes and villains in the franchise.

The characters that appeared in the fights as Kameo Fighters are Kano, Goro, Jax, and Sonya Blade. NetherRealm has also confirmed Cyrax, Sektor, and Frost as Kameo Fighters. The EVO trailer has also confirmed Sareena and Stryker as Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1. Sub-Zero and Kung Lao, however, were also shown as Kameo Fighters, so it is possible that some of the aforementioned heroes like Kano and Sonya also become full-fledged playable characters in the game.

1 Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Characters

From the left to the right stand the following Mortal Kombat 1 characters: Quan-Chi, Ermac, Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Takeda. Hovering above them is Homelander, with his arms wide open.

Previously leaked by an early listing of the game’s Premium Edition on Amazon Italy, as reported by GameSpot, the DLC characters for Mortal Kombat 1 were confirmed by NetherRealm during the game's panel at SDCC. Players who buy the game’s more expensive versions will receive the Kombat Pack, which includes the following characters: Quan Chi, Ermac, Takeda, Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Homelander. While the first three characters are classic returns to the franchise, the final three are guests from other popular adult-themed franchises.

Omni-Man is a powerful superhero from Invincible, while Peacemaker will take on John Cena’s interpretation of the anti-hero in the HBO Max TV show. As is the case with the two previously mentioned guests, Homelander, from The Boys, will likely be another popular addition. Tremor, Johnny Cage, Khameleon, Mavado, and Ferra, on the other hand, are all listed as Kameo Fighters from the Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat 1.
