Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Morbius

Marvel's Living Vampire Morbius has been absorbed into the MCU adjacent Sony-Verse, but is he more powerful than Blade? First released domestically on April 1st, 2022, Morbius opened to a largely negative critical reception, with particular ire directed at Morbius' tired-feeling plot and uninspired special effects. Despite these poor reviews, scant praise was reserved for Jared Leto's performance as the titular Morbius, whose potent "Living Vampire" derives a vast array of his powers and demons from his Marvel comics counterpart.

In contrast, Stephen Norrington's 1998 cult classic Blade redefined the parameters of Marvel superhero movies and paved the way for the MCU's comic book adaptation success. While Blade's gratuitous violence and blood-soaked, seedy atmosphere are a far cry from the majority of more modern Marvel superhero takes, reception for the 1998 movie was so great that it forced a retcon of Marvel comics Blade's origins and powers. This change in Blade's origin story is particularly pertinent given it was Morbius that originally bit Blade, giving him several vampire-like powers character (as revealed in issue Blade: Vampire Hunter #1) before Marvel changed the Blade canon to better align with his movie likeness.

This, therefore, begs the question as to which Marvel vampire is more powerful when comparing Morbius the Living Vampire with Blade the Daywalker. With the two characters intrinsically linked in Marvel comics canon even after Blade's origin story change, there is ample evidence of the pair's often volatile rivalry over the years. As a result, here's who is the more powerful Marvel vampire, as well as a look at Morbius and Blade's most recent Sony-Verse and MCU incarnations, respectively.

Morbius' Sony-Verse Powers Explained

Morbius Trailer Jared Leto

The Sony-Verse's Morbius appears to be a super-charged version of his Marvel comics counterpart, with the 2022 movie imbuing Morbius with a distinct new power. Morbius' ability to control vast swarms of bats at will helps him defeat his evil-turned brother Milo (Matt Smith); before the ending of Morbius sees the titular character embrace his new self and take flight with a bat swarm over the streets of New York City. This is an entirely new, seemingly potent power devised for the Morbius movie, with his Marvel comics counterpart specifically unable to commune with beasts due to his pseudo-vampire origins by chemical means.

This said, the Sony-Verse's Morbius does carry an array of powers that are derived from his Marvel comics version, including superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and echolocation. The on-screen Morbius also retains his iconic ability to glide on air, although while the comics explain that this is due to his hollow bones, the Sony-Verse movie is less clear on how he obtains this power. However, one Marvel power left unexplored for now by Jared Leto's Morbius is the character's healing factor that is so prevalent in the comics, with the original Living Vampire able to restore his body by drinking excessive amounts of blood.

Why Wesley Snipes' Blade Is So Strong

Wesley Snipes, victorious, as Blade.

Wesley Snipes' titular character in the original Blade trilogy is a formidable proposition, with Blade able to take down an embodiment of the blood god La Magra (Blade 1998) and Dracula himself (Blade: Trinity) with relative ease. Blade's strength in the original three Blade movies is derived from his unique genealogy as a Daywalker, a human-vampire hybrid that possesses the supernatural abilities of vampires without any of their weaknesses, except for the requirement to consume human blood. This places Blade as a singular entity within the Blade movie canon, with no other vampire or human able to match Blade's unique cocktail of skills and abilities. With vampires seemingly being the only supernatural forces in the original Blade continuity, it is not unreasonable to place Wesley Snipes' Blade at the top of the food chain, with his character ultimately unmatched across the Blade trilogy despite several close calls against other foes.

How Powerful Will Mahershala Ali's Blade Be?

Fan poster featuring Mahershala Ali as Blade

While the MCU version of Blade is being kept tightly under wraps for now (barring a vocal cameo in Eternals' post-credits scene), it is fair to assume that he will likely derive the majority of his powers from Marvel comics' Blade. This would give Mahershala Ali's Blade a potent cocktail of super-senses, speed, strength, a heightened healing factor, and a much longer lifespan than the average human, as well as an immunity to full vampiric transformation and other psychic powers, and the power to sense supernatural activity around him.

Marvel's original comics Blade, like his Wesley Snipes counterpart, is also a fierce opponent in hand-to-hand combat. Marvel's Blade is a master mixed-martial artist across most of the major disciplines, and his swordplay and marksmanship make him an expert tactician in any given situation. Marvel's Blade is also essentially a walking encyclopedia on Marvel's version of the occult, with Blade helping numerous superheroes such as Spider-Man hunt down nefarious cults and creatures inhabiting New York City and the wider Marvel world.

Although this roll call of abilities is imposing, they must be placed in the context of the ever-burgeoning MCU and its array of superheroes and villains. While Marvel's Blade does not lack confidence, the MCU phase 4 is currently setting up deity-level characters such as Thor: Love and Thunder's Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) that would likely make light work of a character such as Blade. However, until Mahershala Ali's Blade hits screens, this is all conjecture, with his MCU powers remaining a largely unknown quantity until then.

Morbius vs. Blade: Who Is More Powerful?

Morbius Blade MCU

While the Sony-Verse's Morbius has undoubtedly received a power-up, any incarnation of Blade wins this contest hands down. This boils down to the fact that Blade, both in Marvel comics and his movies, is singularly primed to kill various versions of vampires and carries a skillset that specifically resists vampiric powers and charms. Even Morbius' pseudo-vampiric status and new bat control powers in the Sony-Verse would do little to save him from Blade's single-minded focus here, with Blade's abilities a hard counter for Morbius' superpowers. While the MCU's Blade is yet to be unveiled, it is hard to see any version of Morbius besting the man who has dedicated his entire life to eradicating the vampiric scourge from the face of Earth in any continuity and timeline.
