A new Morbius trailer arrives featuring clues tying the Jared Leto-led film to The Amazing Spider-Man, Venom and Marvel Cinematic universes. Jared Leto leads an ensemble cast that includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, Tyrese Gibson and Michael Keaton reprising his role as Adrian Toomes, better known as the Vulture, from Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film hails from Safe House and Life director Daniel Espinosa with a script from Dracula Untold duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
Morbius centers on Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disorder desperately seeking a cure before he dies. Upon discovering a dangerous treatment utilizing a form of vampirism, Morbius finds himself healed and imbued with superhuman abilities, though also saddled with a thirst for blood and the authorities on the hunt for him. Though production on the film wrapped just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, its release was put on hold due to theaters remaining closed during the time and the studio's decision to prioritize Venom: Let There Be Carnage's release.
With just two months left until the film's arrival, Sony has debuted a new Morbius trailer. The video features a better look at the Leto-led superhero film and a number of references and clues tying the SSU, MCU and The Amazing Spider-Man together. Check out the new trailer below:
After the first Morbius trailer indicated connections to the MCU and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy with the reveal of Keaton's Vulture appearing and artwork indicative of the first webslinger movies, the new video seems to be expanding the worlds even more. The trailer features plenty of sweeping aerial shots of New York City to help establish the setting of the film, with one such shot noticeably featuring an Oscorp building. While the design for the building doesn't quite fit previous depictions of the Osbourne company's headquarters, the design of the company's logo is identical to the one seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, seemingly connecting the film to Marc Webb's universe.
The nature of connection between the MCU, SSU and previous Spider-Man universes remains unclear and the new Morbius trailer is further evidence of the two studios mysterious handling of the properties. The post-credits for Venom: Let There Be Carnage did indicate a merging of the former two franchises and the new trailer does feature a reference to San Francisco and a direct Venom name drop by Leto's titular character, though how Raimi and Webb's films may fit into both Morbius and the ongoing franchises is a question on audiences' minds and has sparked endless debate over the past few years. Only time will tell how Leto's film factors into this multiverse scheme when Morbius hits theaters on January 28, 2022.
