Morbius' theatrical release was met with an abysmal 17 percent Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, but the Fresh audience score beats the critic score more drastically than any MCU movie. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its nearly flawless track record in Rotten Tomatoes, Sony's Marvel movies have struggled with critic reviews a lot more, particularly the Venom movies.

Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage were big box office hits despite taking a lashing from critics, likely due to their much stronger reception with audiences. Both Venom movies earned Rotten Tomatometer scores, but Venom earned still saw a positive 81 percent audience score, while Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned a 73 percent score. Venom: Let There Be Carnage actually saw an even higher audience score under Rotten Tomatoes' "Verified Audience" system, but since the first Venom and most MCU movies released prior to the creation of the Verified Audience system, we'll make all comparisons using the original "All Audience" score for the sake of parity.

Morbius continues Sony's Spider-Man Universe Rotten Tomatoes trend, earning just 17 percent on the critic Tomatometer with audiences scoring it 49 points higher at 66 percent, a wider audience favored gap than any MCU movie. With an overall Rotten Tomatoes average score of 84 percent from critics and 83 percent from audiences, the MCU is actually typically reviewed (barely) better by critics than by audiences by an average of just one point. Of the MCU's 27 installments, only 12 MCU movies have seen their Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score beat the critic score, 11 of which saw a margin of 9 points or less. The biggest outlier is the MCU's only "Rotten" movie, Eternals, with its 78 percent audience score beating its 47 percent audience score by 31 points.

Morbius Set In MCU Shared Universe Connection Explained SR

Of course, just because there's a wider gap doesn't mean audiences actually prefer Morbius, as Eternals' Rotten Tomatoes critic score beats Morbius by 30 points and its audience score beats Morbius by 12 points; however, it does highlight a consistent disconnect between how critics and audiences treat Sony's Marvel movies compared to the MCU. While Venom: Let There Be Carnage has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score that exceeds its critic score by 17 points (more than any MCU movie other than Eternals), Venom actually takes the cake with its 81 percent Rotten Tomatoes audience score coming in 51 points higher than its 30 percent critic score, a bigger difference than any Marvel movie from Sony or Marvel studios. Altogether, Sony's recent Spider-Man spin-offs see Rotten Tomatoes audience scores beat critics scores by an average of 34 points, 3

Ironically, when it comes to the MCU, critics are far more likely to score a movie higher than audiences. The average difference is close to zero, but Ant-Man and the Wasp has a critic score 12 points higher than its audience score, Black Panther has critics exceed audiences by 17 points, and Captain Marvel owns the MCU's widest total Rotten Tomatoes gap with critics scoring it 34 points higher than audiences. While critics clearly tend to prefer MCU movies over Sony's Spider-Man Universe, box office tends to be influenced far more by Rotten Tomatoes audience scores more than critic scores, leading both Venom movies to strong box office hauls; although, with just one weekend under its belt, Morbius' box long-term box office success remains to be seen.
