Director Daniel Espinosa teased that he might be setting up a Sinister Six movie after Morbius. The Sinister Six made their first appearance in 1964's Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, and while they have taken on many different forms over the years, the original villainous group included Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Sandman, and Electro. Although, there have been other famous Sinister Six characters who have popped up in various Spider-Man movies since, like the Green Goblin.

The release of the Morbius trailer was filled with MCU Spider-Man Easter eggs and confirmed an appearance from Michael Keaton, who played the Vulture to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Initially, it was unclear if Keaton would be revising his role, but the inclusion of Venom in No Way Home showcased the MCU’s multiverse connection to Sony, so it was easy for fans to assume Keaton was playing a variant of Adrian Toomes. Many assumed they would have to wait to get the answer to these burning questions, but Espinosa confirmed that fans will be seeing the MCU’s Adrian Toomes in Morbius.

In an interview with CinemaBlend posted on Twitter, Espinosa was eager to discuss the details of Morbius. The director shared that Morbius is searching for teammates and has already enlisted the help of someone. Espinosa didn’t give any further details about who this may be, but Adrian Toomes looks the most likely, despite other Sinister Six characters also existing in this universe. Read the tweet below:

A Sinister Six movie has long been in development for Sony, and it seems to finally be getting some real traction. While the inclusion of Keaton’s MCU Toomes may result in some complications for other aspects of the MCU and Sony’s Marvel Universe down the line, it does give Morbius his most likely first recruit for the Sinister Six. The Spider-Man comics’ extensive history makes it difficult to pinpoint exactly what other characters will be used as the founding members of the Sinister Six, however, Sony has already been working to introduce some of them. Venom was reintroduced to audiences in 2018, with his dislike for Spider-Man being teased in the end credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Sony will continue to bring in Sinister Six characters with the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie.

Now that Venom and Morbius have a firmly established connection to the MCU and Raimi’s movies, Sony has been given an even wider range of familiar characters to pick from. Although many believed Sony’s long-awaited Sinister Six movie to be dead in the water even with Amy Pascal’s promise that it was still in the works, Espinosa has given fans some new hope. Morbius may not be the first name that comes to mind when fans think of the Sinister Six but he appears to be taking a central role in its on-screen creation.
