Morbius 2 trends online as audiences jokingly call for a sequel to Marvel's recent vampire movie. Starring Jared Leto as the titular character, Morbius tells the story of a terminally ill biochemist who attempts to cure himself of a rare blood disorder, becoming a vampire in the process. The film was a flop at the box office and was critically panned, although the audience reaction was generally warmer with Morbius currently holding a 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Morbius joins Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage as part of Sony's Spider-Man Universe. The film's post-credit scenes, which were widely criticized, directly connect the film to the MCU, with Michael Keaton reprising his role as Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. The post-credits scenes hint at the creation of the Sinister Six and a team-up against Spider-Man, a trend that Sony would appear to be building upon with the upcoming Kraven the Hunter. Since its release and the poor reception that followed, Morbius has become the fascination of Internet meme culture, with the film most recently streaming in its entirety on Twitch.
Continuing the recent trend of Morbius memes, Morbius 2 was recently trending on Twitter, with many fans jokingly calling for a sequel. The hilarious fan comments make frequent mention of the phrase "It's Morbin' time," with many fans demanding that Leto say the line in his next appearance as the character. Due to the film's generally poor box office reception, it seems unlikely that Morbius will actually get a sequel, but the character could certainly appear in a team-up film down the line. Many Twitter users note that, despite the joking tone of those calling for Morbius 2, there is the potential for Sony to misinterpret the memes, with one user hilariously pointing out that, "THE ALGORITHM DOES NOT UNDERSTAND IRONY. YOU ARE MANIFESTING MORBIUS 2 INTO EXISTENCE." Other users seem genuinely happy at the prospect of a sequel, however, with the meme culture surrounding the first Morbius making the film much more enjoyable.
It remains to be seen whether Morbius will get another standalone film, but fans are clearly having fun with the meme culture the first film has spawned. With the characters of Sony's Spider-Man Universe now appearing to be more directly headed toward a showdown with Spider-Man, it's entirely possible that Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Vulture, and Venom will all appear in a film together in the future. Leto himself has said that his character has a "date with destiny" with Tom Holland's Spider-Man but, for now, it would seem that, instead of paving the way for Morbius 2, Morbius' only destiny is to live on at the heart of Twitter meme culture.
