The Moon Knight trailer secretly sets up the Disney+ TV show's potential villain twist. Marvel Studios has finally given viewers their first glimpse of the next Disney+ TV show, dropping a trailer for the Moon Knight Disney+ series. Marvel is notorious for trailers that conceal as much as they reveal, but this time around the trailer is appropriately cryptic - even if it may reveal a lot more than the average viewer realizes.

Marc Spector is one of Marvel's most unique characters, and Moon Knight is often unfairly compared to Batman, both being wealthy vigilantes who stalk the night. Moon Knight is rather more complex, though, because he suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, and the comics frequently have told the story from his perspective, leaving readers struggling to figure out what's real and what's just in Moon Knight's mind. That seems to be the same approach Marvel is taking in their Moon Knight Disney+ TV show, with one disturbing shot in which the lead character briefly sees a monster stalking toward the elevator he's in - only for it to turn out to be an elderly woman. But whatever reality may be in Moon Knight - however many enemies are hallucinatory, however many are real - it's reasonable to assume there'll be a major villain twist. So far, literally every single live-action MCU Disney+ TV show has had a villain twist. So who will be the surprise villain of Moon Knight?

The Moon Knight trailer subtly offers a clue. The aforementioned scene with the elderly woman is lifted straight from Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood's phenomenal Moon Knight run, which launched in 2016. In this series, Moon Knight discovered the ancient Egyptian gods had escaped their prison in another dimension and invaded Earth, although most were unable to manifest corporeally, and instead took hosts. Moon Knight was one of the few who could perceive the extradimensional entities dwelling inside human beings. In this run, Moon Knight eventually discovered the architect of the invasion was in fact the god Moon Knight was sworn to serve - Khonshu. Given Marvel Studios' Moon Knight seems to be drawing upon Lemire and Smallwood's run, it's thus reasonable to assume Khonshu is the secret villain.

Moon Knight Confronts Khonshu

Just as in Lemire and Smallwood's run, this would allow Moon Knight to tell a story of discovery as Marc Spector desperately tries to figure out what's happened to him. He could initially believe Khonshu to be his ally against the creatures he catches only brief visions of, before gradually coming to question whether the ancient Egyptian god can actually be trusted. Not every villain twist in the MCU's Disney+ TV shows has been well-executed, but this one has the potential to be truly thrilling to watch.

Such a twist would also set up exciting possibilities for the future of the MCU. It would essentially introduce an entire pantheon of villains and Khonshu would be the most prominent among them. Just as the Ancient One used the power of the Dark Dimension against Dormammu, Moon Knight would become Earth's foremost defense against Khonshu, using the power the moon god himself has given him. Unfortunately, only Moon Knight would be able to see the creatures he was fighting - meaning he'd probably simply be viewed as insane by other Marvel heroes. If this theory is correct, don't expect Moon Knight to join the Avengers anytime soon, even if he is one of Earth's greatest protectors.
