The Moon Knight MCU TV series will introduce a new hero and Marc Spector’s origin story with Khonshu can help to set up the introduction Thor: Love and Thunder’s villain, Gorr the God Butcher. While Gorr the God Butcher has been confirmed for Thor: Love and Thunder and Christian Bale will be playing the antagonist, he has not been teased in the MCU so far. Gorr the God Butcher has the potential to be a major villain, but his story might need to be hinted at before he first appears on screen in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Moon Knight will adapt the story of Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac). In the comics, Spector is a man living with dissociative identity disorder who was serving as a mercenary until he was betrayed and left for dead. However, in his weakened state, the Egyptian god of the moon, Khonshu, made Spector his avatar on Earth, saving his life and giving him superpowers.

Moon Knight’s narrative makes it the perfect place to introduce the idea of Gorr the God Butcher ahead of Thor: Love and Thunder. Gorr the God Butcher came from a planet that was always on the brink of starvation and whose population prayed every day to gods to help them. Gorr’s entire family slowly died in tragedies and from starvation and Gorr came to the conclusion that the gods must not exist. However, after this Gorr came across two gods fighting and realized that not only did gods exist, but they had ignored his people’s cries for help. With Moon Knight being saved by Khonshu, his story flies in the face of Gorr the God Butcher’s narrative and if he learns of Marc Spector’s story he would doubtless question why Moon Knight was saved while Gorr’s family perished. It is unlikely that the Moon Knight MCU series will show Khonshu being killed so soon after the character’s introduction as Khonshu is the source of Moon Knight’s power. However, Gorr the God Butcher can be raised as a real threat to Khonshu and, more importantly, could be shown killing other gods that Khonshu is aware of.

The MCU has a strange relationship with gods, having introduced the Asgardians and dismissed the idea that they are gods and were merely perceived and worshipped as such by humans who did not understand the origins of their powers. While Moon Knight can introduce Gorr the God Butcher on screen, it can also re-establish the idea of what a god is within the MCU. While the Asgardians are powerful in their own right and can live for thousands of years, gods like Khonshu have been around in Marvel comics since at least 1,000,000 B.C. and are able to empower mortal avatars, like Moon Knight, to conduct their will on Earth. Khonshu’s father, Amon Ra, made his own avatar on Earth who became an antagonist for Khonshu’s Moon Knight, the Sun King.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to introduce a new pantheon of gods with the Olympians joining the fray and Russell Crowe is confirmed to be playing Zeus. This should give plenty of targets for Gorr the God Butcher within Thor: Love and Thunder, but Moon Knight can help establish that threat to build anticipation before the film hits theaters. The original Gorr the God Butcher plot in the comics involved time travel and an intention to kill all gods in all times. As Khonshu in various comics is not only the god of the moon and of vengeance but also of time, Moon Knight could play an important part in Thor: Love and Thunder itself.
