Ethan Hawke wanted to join Moon Knight primarily because of Oscar Isaac. Marvel Studios is looking to introduce Marc Sceptor through his own TV show on Disney+ in the next couple of years. Played by the former Poe Dameron actor from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, he is set to face off with Hawke's villain, whose identity has yet to be confirmed.

After wrapping the Infinity Saga through Avengers: Endgame, the MCU is currently on a transition stage as it starts a new overarching narrative. Its future is composed of sequels and origins stories, set to play out either on the big or small screen. There's excitement for familiar faces returning to continue their narratives, but some of Marvel Studios' most exciting projects in the pipeline are those that would debut new key players who don't have any obvious links to the MCU just yet like Chloe Zhao's Eternals and Daniel Destin Cretton's Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. From Disney+'s side of things, however, there's Moon Knight.

As an actor who has a carefully curated portfolio, Hawke says that joining Moon Knight was primarily motivated by wanting to work with the people attached to it, particularly Isaac. Speaking with The Ringer's podcast The Watch, he explains that he admires his said contemporary, particularly with how he handles himself, and because of that, he's keen on working with him. He also has nothing but great things to say about the director of the project, Mohammed Diab, apparently whom he almost worked with via a different movie.

"Well, it's where I'm at as an actor. A lot of it, to be honest, I love the fact that Moon Knight is a lesser-known story and allows more creative freedom. The director is Mohammed Diab and he's a brilliant guy....

A lot of it is Oscar, to me, to be honest with you, I find him to be a very exciting player in my field. I like what he’s doing with his life. He reminds me of the actors, when I first arrived at New York, that I looked up to. Oscar’s younger than me, and I like the way he carries himself, and I like the way he thinks. And in general, good things happen when you’re in the room with people that you like the way they think, right?

And you have to speak to your time, right? You can't pretend you don't live in the time period that you live in. You have to try to make your time period better."

Ethan Hawke in The Purge Season 2 Finale

Hawke's casting for Marvel Studios' Moon Knight came as a surprise considering that he previously made controversial comments against comic book-based properties when he argued that Logan isn't a great movie but a "fine superhero movie." There was understandable backlash since the James Mangold and Hugh Jackman feature is regarded as one, if not the best of what the superhero sandbox has to offer. Later on, Hawke clarified his comments, explaining that he wasn't looking down on comic book projects because he's personally a big fan of them. Instead, he supposedly “was talking about a much more nuanced point about money and America.

Overall, Hawke's reasoning for wanting to join Moon Knight, which has more creative wiggle room, backs up the actor's additional comments. It proves that he doesn't put these types of endeavors beneath him; he was merely waiting for the right project for him to board. In any case, with his caliber, his involvement in the MCU and superhero world, in general, is undoubtedly a win for everyone.
