Warning: This article contains spoilers for Moon Knight episode 6

Moon Knight producer Grant Curtis explains why the Egyptian God Taweret was chosen to guide Marc and Steven in the afterlife. The MCU Disney+ series became the first Marvel Studios project of 2022 when it premiered on March 30, introducing the titular superhero played by Oscar Isaac to the long-running franchise. The Moon Knight season finale dropped on Wednesday, May 4, just in time for the theatrical release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

In Moon Knight episode 5, Marc Spector's dissociative identity disorder took on a new spin as both he and his alter, Steven Grant, gained their own bodies while in the Egyptian underworld. They are guided there by Taweret, voiced by Antonia Salib, the goddess of childbirth and fertility who has the head of a hippopotamus and is designated the protector of mothers and children. The gentle, bubbly deity seems genuinely invested in helping Marc and Steven balance their scales, so that they may either find peace in the afterlife or take the rare path back to the land of the living and stop Ethan Hawke's Arthur Harrow.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Curtis explains why the Moon Knight team chose Taweret as their afterlife guide, as opposed to gods like Osiris and Anubis, who are more traditionally associated with the underworld. While the producer says he can't fully elaborate for spoiler reasons, he does say the creative team was drawn to Taweret from the beginning and were eager to find a way to work her into the show. On top of that, Salib's casting renewed their enthusiasm for the character, helping them be confident in their choice. Check out Curtis' full quote below:

There were a variety of factors, and some of them are spoilers that I can't get into. But to be honest with you, very early on in the process, we had a poster in the room of all the Egyptian gods. There was one that we fell in love with from the very beginning, and it was Taweret, this hippo goddess. We just kept pointing to her. "I want to know her story. I want to spend more time with her." To be honest, that's how a lot of that shook out. Then there were some other narrative points, and I don't want to spoil anything. But it was really falling in love with that character and her bubbly personality on the page. Then once Antonia [Salib] came aboard, we just fell in love with her all over again. She just kept on being the leader of that journey through the Duat that we wanted to go with.

Taweret waving to Moon Knight in Moon Knight

Taweret's role in the story expands significantly in Moon Knight episode 6, when May Calamawy's Layla, desperate to join the fight against Harrow and the goddess Ammit, reluctantly agrees to become her avatar. The decision sees Layla become the MCU's Scarlet Scarab, a minor Marvel Comics character who acted as the protector of Egypt, complete with a costume that includes metallic wings. While Marc's experience with Khonshu makes her qualify that she will only be Taweret's avatar temporarily, she and the kind hippo goddess seem like a good match, and viewers are hopeful that they will continue their partnership in future Marvel installments.

Given that this interview took place after the Moon Knight finale's release and that Osiris' avatar is already featured in the series, the potential spoiler Curtis refers to could suggest some future plan for Anubis. While it's unknown if the god is free or encased in stone, as Khonshu and Ammit were, a potential Moon Knight season 2 storyline could see the Egyptian god of death come after Marc and Steven for having escaped the afterlife. Of course, Marvel has yet to confirm new episodes of the series, and it's possible that Isaac and Layla's next MCU appearances are in another superhero's movie or TV show.
