Moon Knight season 2 has been given another status update. As the sixth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Moon Knight follows Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac), a mercenary living with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Marc is pulled into a dangerous mystery alongside his alters; Steven Grant, a gentle-natured British museum shop worker, and the only briefly glimpsed Jake Lockley, also played by Isaac. Released earlier this year on Disney+, Moon Knight became a hit for Marvel, garnering strong viewership and acclaim, with critics praising Isaac's performance and the show's handling of mental health issues.

Given the open-ended nature of Moon Knight's final episode, many viewers have wondered whether Isaac's Marc/Steven/Jake could return to screens. Recently, Moon Knight director Mohamed Diab and Isaac himself cryptically teased the series' return. Diab recently shared a TikTok video featuring him and Isaac, in which they responded to a user asking the two about a potential Moon Knight season 2. The pair answer at the end of the video, with an appearance from Isaac seemingly teasing season 2 by saying, "Why else would we be in Cairo?"

Now, Diab has taken to Twitter to provide some clarity on Moon Knight's future. Diab responded to a Twitter user who explained that they hope the creative team behind Moon Knight does a better job of incorporating the character’s Jewish heritage in a possible season 2. Diab clarified there actually haven't been any discussions about the character's future, indicating that Moon Knight season 2 is not in the works. He also explicitly responded to the user's criticism of Jewish representation in the series, calling it "[so] valid." See his tweet below:

The director's response is interesting, as it seemingly goes back on his and Isaac's previous season 2 filming tease. But while Diab's reply indicates there are currently no set plans for the future of Moon Knight, it could indicate that the team just hasn't gone back to the drawing board yet. Marvel may also be keeping plans for the character under wraps. After all, Diab has previously explained that Marvel has kept him in the dark about the series' future, and Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater explained season 2 was up to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Isaac. But with Moon Knight season 1 ending on a cliffhanger, along with its huge success, it would certainly make sense for the character to return in the MCU, at least in some capacity.

Although Moon Knight season 2 would be optimal, there are other ways he could return in future MCU projects. But if Isaac's character does get a season 2, how Marc's Jewish heritage is incorporated will be a topic of discussion. Much of the criticism towards Moon Knight's Jewish representation surrounded the fact that while the MCU version of Marc is Jewish, references to his Judaism remain surface-level, and don't actually influence his character or the story in meaningful ways. The franchise has made strides towards increasing representation in terms of gender, race, sexuality and ability in recent years, but Jewish MCU characters have remained largely unexplored. While this lack of representation can’t be undone for past characters, Moon Knight season 2 would be an opportunity to better represent and explore a Jewish character in the MCU.
