Warning: SPOILERS for Moon Knight episode 3

Marvel Studios might already be teasing Thor: Love and Thunder's villain through the missing gods in Moon Knight's Ennead. The Disney+ show is largely disconnected from the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, as Moon Knight instead focuses primarily on its own story. However, Marvel could be subtly planting seeds for upcoming projects and characters at the same time. This isn't just in regards to how Moon Knight will continue appearing after the series concludes either. Moon Knight might be responsible for setting up Thor: Love and Thunder's villain, Gorr the God Butcher.

The addition of Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale, in Thor: Love and Thunder immediately ignited speculation about how Marvel will show him gaining that terrifying moniker. When it was later revealed that the Olympian god Zeus (Russell Crowe) is set to appear, he became a clear candidate to become one of Gorr's victims. There have since been reports that link Thor: Love and Thunder to other deities, including Black Panther's goddess Bast. All of this puts the fates of Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Jane Foster a.k.a. Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman) in question, as audiences expect Gorr to slay several prominent gods in the MCU.

Gorr's impending live-action debut links up well with Moon Knight and the show's exploration of Egyptian gods. After establishing the rules of being a god's Avatar and teasing the superpowered group that oversees them, Moon Knight episode 3 saw the proper formation of The Ennead. These powerful gods came together at Khonshu's request to judge Arthur Harrow's actions, but the number of gods in attendance was quite noticeable. The show previously established that The Ennead traditionally has nine members and there are nine seats at their meeting location. However, only five gods make up the council that passes judgment on Khonshu. Moon Knight doesn't take any time to address the absent gods and the Ennead's lacking roster, but it could be a hint that Gorr is already butchering gods in the MCU ahead of Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor Love and Thunder explains why Gorr the god butcher wants to kill Thor

Based on how little information Marvel has revealed about Thor: Love and Thunder, it is not clear when Gorr the God Butcher's origin takes place and he comes to possess the Nescrosword. There is a strong chance, though, that Gorr has been actively slaying deities in the MCU for years by the time he meets up with Thor and Mighty Thor. Moon Knight now makes it possible that the Egyptian gods were even among those who encountered his wrath. This would explain why The Ennead only has five members at the moment, as Gorr could've killed some of the missing members (it is unclear whether Ammit and Khonshu were part of the Ennead themselves and represent two of those missing seats).

Moon Knight episode 3 even provided some additional background on where this could've occurred and the fallout. Khonshu mentions that the Ennead gods need to leave the Overvoid before they lose this realm. The Overvoid is the Asgard-like home of the Egyptian gods in ancient mythology and Marvel's comic universe. It is possible that Gorr the God Butcher previously found the Overvoid and killed several members of The Ennead. If Gorr's battle with Moon Knight's gods took place somewhere else, it could also be explained that this is where they retreated to in the hopes of steering clear of the god butcher. This would be a clever connection for Marvel to make at some point in the series or Thor: Love and Thunder to establish what happened to Moon Knight's missing gods.
