Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Moon Knight, episode 1

The real Moon Knight is barely in Moon Knight episode 1, as Marvel elected to build up to Marc Spector taking control and having an action scene. One of the big selling points for Marvel Studios' Disney+ series was Oscar Isaac essentially playing multiple characters thanks to Moon Knight's dissociative identity disorder. Marketing made it clear that Steven Grant and Marc Spector were the primary personalities Isaac plays in the series, with Spector the one comic readers best known as the hard-hitting vigilante. However, the real Moon Knight is barely in the first episode.

While Moon Knight episode 1 doesn't wait too long to tease the multiple personalities, Steven Grant is the one viewers follow for the majority of the episode. Steven is a British museum gift shop employee obsessed with Egyptian mythology. Viewers watch his normal life and then see him in the countryside where he's being chased by Arthur Harrow's men. Just as the various events get too dangerous for Steven to handle, though, he blacks out and wakes up to find himself in a new location or in the aftermath of Moon Knight's violenceMoon Knight episode 1 keeps up the veil of secrecy about what happens when Marc is in control until the very end when the real Moon Knight emerges to fight a jackal.

The small role for Marc Spector in Moon Knight episode 1 is quite surprising, as it means the show deliberately hides the more recognizable and capable personality. This results in Moon Knight episode 1 lacking in the action department, as Steven is not a fighter like Marc. This raises the question as to exactly why Marvel Studios would want to hide the real Moon Knight for so much in the show's first episode. Even casual audiences were likely expecting more of the Moon Knight's main personality. It seems that Moon Knight made this decision in an effort to build up the mystery surrounding what was actually happening to Steven Grant. By not showing Marc in control, the show leaves viewers questioning what is really happening and what could be in Steven's head.

Moon Knight Steven Grant Marc Spector

It's a bold move for the Marc Spector Moon Knight to have such a small role in the first episode, but one that makes sense. Telling the character's story in this fashion allows Marvel to keep some extra mystery about him that could be undone by showing Marc right away. Meanwhile, it also meant viewers get to spend almost an entire episode with the Steven Grant personality. He might not be the superhero-type like Marc Spector, but he's still an important part of Moon Knight's overall story. It even allowed Marvel to use the Moon Knight transformation, suit, and fighting style as an exciting tease of what will come next.

Since Moon Knight episode 1 waits until the very end to show Marc Spector in action, viewers can expect to see much more of him in upcoming episodes. The interplay between Steven and Marc's personalities is an integral part of the character, but Marvel will also want to deliver on the action audiences expect from an MCU project. The latter is where Marc Spector will come into play as he wears the all-white superhero suit. So even though it took longer than some would've liked to see the real Moon Knight, he should be a bigger part of the show's future.
