Warning: SPOILERS for Moon Knight episode 2.

Marc Spector might be the lead hero in Moon Knight, but Khonshu already is interested in having Layla pick up the mantle as his avatar next. As the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe hero in Phase 4, Oscar Isaac's Marc Spector/Steven Grant is just being introduced to audiences. Moon Knight is taking a slower approach to showing why he's the perfect choice to be Khonshu's avatar, as exploring Moon Knight's multiple identities, or alters, adds additional layers to Marc's attempts to serve the Egyptian moon god. Surprisingly, Marvel has already set up his potential replacement if Khonshu becomes unhappy, as Marc's wife, Layla (May Calamawy) is of interest to the god.

The relationship between Khonshu and his avatar is complicated, to say the least, but Marc Spector seems to be well-equipped to do what is asked of him. He's a former mercenary who is highly skilled in combat, but he's also not afraid to get his hands dirty if that means protecting people or doing what he thinks is right. However, his disassociative identity disorder can get in the way of Khonshu's plans. The Egyptian moon god is clearly frustrated whenever Steven Grant takes control from Marc Spector, as Khonshu berates him with various insults and views him as an unwilling and useless part of his plan. It is partially due to these frustrations that Khonshu is already threatening Marc with Layla becoming his next avatar.

May Calamawy's Layla hasn't had a significant role in Moon Knight through the first few episodes, but even the small glimpses of her character indicate why Khonshu thinks she'd make a good replacement for Marc. One big hurdle to get past is that Layla is already familiar with the powers and lore thanks to her knowing about Marc's indentured relationship with Khonshu, so she'd theoretically be able to succeed in the role quicker. Marvel has also demonstrated that Layla is a capable fighter in her own right and has knowledge about Egyptian mythology and gods - not to mention she is fearless.

Based on how Moon Knight has introduced Layla, it makes perfect sense why Khonshu would think that she is a suitable replacement if he has to sever ties with Marc at some point. It remains to be seen if that will happen or if Khonshu actually wants Layla to be his avatar, but his threats are still resonating. Although Marc is a good choice for Moon Knight, he's already hoping that this relationship and these duties are nearing the end. He knows firsthand how difficult it can be to serve Khonshu and have Moon Knight's powers, and even though he suggested a divorce would be best for Layla, it all is done in a way to protect her. Marc certainly doesn't want Layla to endure the pain of being Khonshu's avatar, and the Egyptian god is likely smart enough to know the threats are working as motivation.

If Khonshu does genuinely want Layla as his next avatar, it will be fascinating to see if Marvel makes that possible. It has yet to be established that a god can have multiple avatars at once or split its power between multiple individuals, but perhaps that could happen at some point in the future. This is likely the only way that Layla will become Khonshu's avatar for any significant period of time, as it would otherwise cut Marc Spector's MCU future short. For that reason, while Layla is a good candidate for Khonshu's next avatar, she may never get the chance to have those powers in Moon Knight or after.
