Khonshu doesn't look kindly upon Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac) in Marvel's Moon Knight, and the reason for his hate is pretty simple. On Moon Knight, Isaac plays American mercenary Marc Spector as well as British museum employee Steven Grant. Marc lives with dissociative identity disorder, with Steven being one of his alternate personalities, or alters, while the two also share another partnership of sorts.

Marc is the avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, with Marc fighting Khonshu's battles in modern times as Moon Knight. Khonshu takes a swift disliking to the much more timid Steven right off the bat, and from his perspective, the reasoning is very simple. As Khonshu's human avatar, Marc ventures into danger, while Steven does the opposite. Steven is a far meeker individual, and the fact of Marc having to share a body with him, and Steven's seemingly greater control over their transfers, clearly vexes Khonshu. Early on in Moon Knight, when Steven finds himself in the Alps, overwhelmed by his sudden dislocation and unable to understand the presence of a voice in his head. The first episode of Moon Knight shows Khonshu's frustration with the understandably confused and frightened Steven when the latter attempts to hand over the Scarab of Ammit over the attacking followers of Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke).

With Marc as his human vessel, Khonshu has what he believes to be an ideal vehicle for fighting battles and emerging victorious in quite brutal ways. Steven's more mild-mannered and intellectually-oriented approach to danger is choosing flight over fight. From Khonshu's perspective, he has a far more direct and reliable means of accomplishing his missions in Marc. Of the two them, Steven is the more likely to take himself out of dangerous situations compared to Marc, and this is the main reason for Khonshu's annoyance with him.

Moon Knight and Khonshu

But beyond Steven getting in the way of Khonshu's plans with Marc, the moon god simply dislikes Steven on a fundamental level. He is the god of justice, bringing swift vengeance to those who have done wrong. In his pursuit of bringing wrongdoers to justice, however, Khonshu has shown himself to be merciless, unfeeling, and to readily cause pain for humans if it helps him more quickly achieve his goals. Efficiency in pursuit of his aims is what Khonshu is all about. While Marc Spector has no desire to kill or maim anyone, he's efficient and effective. Steven, however, is none of those things; his strength comes from his brains and his compassion, not his brawn, qualities that Khonshu fundamentally does not value. In Khonshu's mind, Steven's "weakness" means he's not even a useful tool, as Marc is, and thus, Khonshu has no respect for him.

Khonshu is prepared to begrudgingly work with Steven whenever the situation calls for it, but with his need for a soldier, he'd always rather call Marc into action. Khonshu's disdain for Steven, in the end, isn't the fault of Steven himself, but of Khonshu's strict and brutal view of the world. Khonshu simply sees his chosen avatar Marc Spector as the most capable of getting the job done, and Moon Knight requiring him to work with both him and Steven brings out Khonshu's grumpy side.
