Warning! Spoilers ahead for Moon Knight season 1.

Marvel's Moon Knight introduced powerful new figures for the MCU, including the Egyptian pantheon of gods. The series follows mercenary Marc Spector and his alter identity Steven Grant as they serve Khonshu, the ancient Egyptian god of the Moon as the god's fist of vengeance, Moon Knight. While Marc and Steven seem to part ways with Khonshu in the season 1 finale, Moon Knight's post-credits scene may prove otherwise.

Unlike the Asgardian gods, the Ennead don't seem to have a physical presence on Earth. Instead, they reside in the Overvoid and rely on their avatars to carry out their purposes and seem intent on keeping their existences from being known. After Khonshu is imprisoned in stone by the other gods, Steven is unable to access the healing abilities of the Moon Knight suit and dies after Arthur Harrow shoots him twice in the chest. However, after Layla frees Khonshu from stone and Marc and Steven return from the Duat, Marc, Steven, and Khonshu renegotiate their avatar agreement, with Khonshu giving his word to release them both.

Marc and Steven are secretly still Khonshu's avatars because their recently revealed third alter, Jake Lockley, is still serving Khonshu. Moon Knight's season 1 finale post-credits scene shows Khonshu having Marc's Jake Lockley alter shoot Harrow/Ammit after springing him from Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital. The fact that Jake Lockley is still serving as Khonshu's avatar and can talk to him means that Marc and Steven were never released in accordance with their agreement earlier in the episode and Khonshu lied to them. Despite Marc being the one to first agree to become Khonshu's avatar, Steven is able to summon his own version of the Moon Knight suit and the powers imbued by Khonshu. This suggests that if one of the alters is Khonshu's avatar, they all are, whether they know about it or not.

Moon Knight Mister Knight Costume Secret Jake Lockley

Khonshu choosing Marc Spector as Moon Knight might have been a happy accident for the god. Harrow warns Marc and Steven that Khonshu lies, and the ending scene demonstrates that this was one time when Harrow could be trusted. The fact that he was telling the truth about Khonshu makes the Moon Knight post-credits scene tragic as it goes against Marc and Steven's wishes. But it also reveals that as long as Jake Lockley serves Khonshu, it is unlikely Marc and Steven will be willingly released from servitude.

Even if Khonshu has released Marc and all his alters, Jake is still willingly working with Khonshu. Assuming that Marc, Steven, Jake, and Khonshu return to the MCU in Moon Knight season 2 or another future project, then there will be more to learn about Marc's alters and avatars of the Ennead. As the MCU's Phase 4 continues to ramp up, Moon Knight's new MCU Avengers team would be off to a bad start if Khonshu were to truly abandon Marc, Steven, and Jake in favor of a new avatar.
