Warning: SPOILERS for Moon Knight episode 5 ahead!

Moon Knight episode 5 revealed what had happened to Oscar Isaac’s Marc and Steven after episode 4’s twist, but what could have been an inconsequential detail from Moon Knight episode 1 actually foreshadowed episode 5’s ending. In a bid to balance the scales of Marc and Steven’s hearts against the feather of truth before their journey through the Duat ended, the two alters had to explore their memories. Despite moving away from the themes dealt with in previous Moon Knight episodes, episode 5 revealed the reasoning behind many unexplained discrepancies between what Marc knew and what Steven was familiar with, letting the truth of Marc’s story come to light for both alters and the viewers.

Moon Knight episode 5’s beginning might have shared some of episode 4’s ambiguity, but it soon clarified the show’s biggest twist. After coming to face with the goddess Taweret (Antonia Salib), Steven easily figured out that he and Marc had died because Harrow shot Marc. Only when Steven and Marc finally started being honest with each other did their souls have the chance to reach some kind of balance, as they would have otherwise been captured by the unbalanced souls of the Duat that could drag them down from Taweret's ship.

While Moon Knight episode 1 showed Steven’s life as it was disrupted both by Khonshu (F. Murray Abraham) and Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), it also included a seemingly harmless sentence that could only be understood after watching episode 5. Moon Knight episode 5’s shocking ending that saw Steven frozen to death in the sand of the Duat was actually foreshadowed by a conversation in Moon Knight episode 1. In it, Steven stopped to talk to a little girl at the museum, scolding her for putting garbage in a replica of the pyramid of Giza and then explaining to her ancient Egypt’s beliefs and funerary practices. Steven told her about how hearts needed to be balanced before being let into the Field of Reeds, and she managed to stun him by asking him, "And did it suck for you? Getting rejected from the Field of Reeds?" much to Steven's confusion at the time.

Steven Grant Moon Knight Episode 5

While the aptly-delivered question sounded like a taunt in episode 1, by the time Disney+ aired Moon Knight episode 5, it became a tragic truth in hindsight, harshly dropped on both Steven and the viewers. Despite ending up in the sand of the Duat to save Marc from the dead rather than getting rejected because of an unbalanced soul, Steven still met his end in the underworld, forever frozen. Steven’s sacrifice was made even more excruciating by the fact Marc and Steven had been pinned one against the other since Moon Knight episode 1, but in episode 5 they started to understand each other’s points of view, with Steven becoming instrumental for Marc to understand he could forgive himself.

Steven’s death led the scales to balance Marc’s heart against the feather of truth, letting him reach the Field of Reeds at the end of Moon Knight episode 5. This could be made possible by Steven’s absence, as when Marc tried to hide their past from Steven, the scales would become even more unbalanced. It was also a result of Marc finally coming to terms with his painful past, which was impossible until Marc and Steven started being honest with each other in the underworld. Moon Knight episode 5 saw Harrow’s plan involving Ammit start, therefore leaving Marc with not much time to come back to life to reunite with Khonshu to stop Harrow. Still, considering how Steven helped him and how they connected, Marc will undoubtedly feel his absence in Moon Knight episode 6. There's now also the mystery of how that young girl from episode 1 eerily predicted Steven's spot-on death.
