Ethan Hawke’s daughter Maya reveals how she convinced her father to accept his role in Moon Knight. Maya Hawke, whose mother is actress Uma Thurman, has relatively recently started her career as an actress. In 2017, she played Jo in the BBC adaptation of Little Women, and she went on to play Robin Buckley in Stranger Things season 3. She reprised the role of Robin in this year's Stranger Things season 4.

2022 has been a big year for Maya’s father, Ethan Hawke. Ethan’s career has taken a villainous turn this year, playing antagonist Arthur Harrow in the Disney+ series Moon Knight and The Grabber in Scott Derrickson’s horror film The Black Phone. Ethan also played King Aurvandil War-Raven in Robert Eggers’ The Northman. Ethan’s role in Moon Knight marked the actor’s debut in the MCU. Throughout his career, Ethan's typically stayed away from superhero fare, and now he's opened up about why he took the part.

Ethan Hawke now states that it was Maya who eventually convinced him to take on his MCU role. In a recent interview with IndieWire, Ethan Hawke revealed that he was initially reluctant to make the dive into the MCU for his Moon Knight role. Maya, however, made an appeal to her father Ethan, saying he should join the MCU and “show them what [he had] to offer.” When Ethan finally agreed, he told fellow Moon Knight actor Oscar Isaac that he too should work to show the MCU the talent Isaac had in store, as the two could experiment with the Marvel world together. Check out the full quote from Ethan Hawke below:

"Maya would say to me, 'Why are you sitting on the outside and telling everyone their sandbox is bad? Why don't you go into their sandbox, play with them, and show them what you have to offer?’ I said to Oscar Isaac, 'We've got to go play in Marvel's sandbox and try to do what we do. We don't have to change Marvel. We just want to show them what we're capable of doing and see if they find it interesting.' So we had a lot of rehearsals and worked on things a lot. We had a really good experience."

Ethan Hawke in Moon Knight

Although Ethan Hawke does not directly state it here, Maya was probably defining her father’s “sandbox” as the indie film circuit in which Ethan has been so immersed in much of his career. Hawke has teamed up with star indie director Richard Linklater to make the entire Before trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight) 2014’s Boyhood and 2001’s Waking Life. Ethan also starred in the A24 film First Reformed, and has broken out into independent film directing himself, directing a couple of recent documentaries as well as 2018’s Sundance hit Blaze. He likely saw solidarity in his co-star Isaac, whose career began on the stage and in independent films such as Inside Llewyn Davis and Ex Machina. Now a major star in the Star Wars universe, MCU, and in the Dune series, Isaac too has broken out more into the mainstream in recent years.

What is to come of Ethan Hawke’s Moon Knight villain remains to be seen. There have been rumors that Ethan's Arthur Harrow will return to Moon Knight. Hawke has expressed that he does not want to make a long-term MCU commitment, but has not directly denied rumors of his villain’s appearance. Leaving the option open, perhaps Ethan Hawke will keep playing in the MCU “sandbox” for a bit longer.
