Warning! Spoilers ahead for Eternals #8

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Eternals, it's been revealed that Moon Knight fights just like one of the immortal beings created by the cosmic Celestials. While the Eternals' heroes have discovered the horrific truth behind their resurrections, they've decided to try and learn how to live without ever needing to be brought back to life again. In the process, it's been confirmed that Marc Spector's Moon Knight fights just like the mighty Ikaris, albeit for a much darker reason.

In Eternals #8 from writer Kieron Gillen and artist Esad Ribić, the heroic Eternals such as Sersi, Phastos, Kingo, Ikaris, and more have holed up with their mortal rivals the Deviants, seeking to change and be different than they've always been. As was revealed in prior issues, the Eternals learned that the constant resurrections of their own lives have always come at the cost of human lives, a dark truth that encourages the Eternals to find new ways to survive. As such, Ikaris in particular becomes motivated to learn how to fight in a more refined and strategic manner.

Thanks to the promise of resurrection, the powerful and strong Ikaris has never had to worry about getting hurt. Why should he? Even if a foe could manage to wound or even kill him, Ikaris has always come back thanks to the Eternals' Great Machine. However, he's now sought out The Reject to teach him how to fight with a focus on defending himself, seeing as how he's never needed to dodge a punch before. Likewise, Moon Knight's fighting technique is incredibly similar as revealed by the villain Taskmaster in 2006's Moon Knight #5, though his reasons for never dodging come from his own self-hatred and rage.

Ikaris-Moon-Knight-Punches

As Taskmaster reveals, Moon Knight prefers to take punches without dodging as they often allow him an advantage after enduring the strike. However, it's also because Moon Knight does not think very highly of himself, carrying large amounts of self-loathing and regret that goes hand in hand with his obsession with achieving justice over his own self-preservation. As a result, while Moon Knight and Ikaris may both struggle to dodge attacks, it's for very different reasons.

While Ikaris previously didn't fear death and took punches due to his confidence he'd be reborn, Moon Knight doesn't fear death because he's already made his peace with his eventual demise. Spector welcomes attacks and sees them as part of the ultimate punishment he feels he deserves. Regardless of their differing motivations, Moon Knight's lack of dodging mirrors Ikaris who has never needed to dodge being one of The Eternals (until now).
