Lucky Thackeray, who plays Donna in Marvel's Moon Knight, has explained her role in the shocking twist ending of the series' fourth episode. The Disney+ series premiered on March 30, with new episodes airing every Wednesday. Starring Oscar Isaac as a man with dissociative identity disorder, it revolves around his quest to solve the mystery of the Egyptian god Ammit, all while trying to stop the villainous cult leader Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) from releasing her.

At the end of Moon Knight episode 4, titled "The Tomb," Isaac's character Steven Grant is shot twice in the chest by Harrow and he is seen falling into an abyss. The next thing Steven sees is when he wakes up in what looks like a psychiatric hospital, with a few characters from previous episodes surrounding him as either fellow patients or nurses. Donna, who was previously seen as Steven Grant's boss at the National Art Gallery in London, is now seen here as a patient. From there, the story gets even crazier.

In an interview with The Direct, Thackeray professed that she was unaware of the plot twist at first. Initially, she thought her only scenes in the show were the ones in the museum, in which she interacts with Isaac. She took the news of her being in additional, more intriguing scenes as quite a shock. Read her full quote below:

“No, I didn’t know that. I didn’t know anything, really. I had my scenes that I did for my audition. And that was it. And in fact, that was only, I think, two little scenes I had. And then there was this talk of the asylum. And I was like, ‘ Oh? Excuse me? What are you talking about? This sounds crazy.’ But then people were talking to me like I knew I was going to be in the asylum, and I just [had] no idea what anyone was talking about. So at the end of [my first trip to Budapest], they said that [I] was going to come back to the asylum. I was like, ‘Okay. Great! I’m available.’”

She went on to say that she faced the challenge of these more intense scenes head-on. At first, because the story details were being kept secret, she was unsure if she was going to be the same Donna from the museum. She even asked the showrunners if they wanted her to use a different accent, but they told her that she's the same Donna, just in a "different… [possible] parallel world." She also hinted that the plush scarab she was holding in the scene was there on purpose, mentioning that she held a box of them in one of her scenes in the first episode, and so this is meant to "tie the two worlds together."

The twist ending in Moon Knight episode 4 is one of the most mind-bending moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Four so far. It's curiously reminiscent of the early episodes of WandaVision, in which the audience was unsure what reality the show was taking place in. Plot twists like these are always appreciated by audiences because it keeps them on their toes and asking questions, especially in a show like Moon Knight where nothing is ever as it seems. Now more than ever, Moon Knight appears to be a horse of a different color for Marvel, and hopefully the last two episodes will reveal the true nature of Steven Grant/Marc Spector's predicament.
