Warning: SPOILERS for Moon Knight episode 6.

Marvel Studios' latest Marvel Cinematic Universe Disney+ show has come to a close, as Moon Knight's ending delivers a twist-filled finale and teases the future. Starring Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector/Steven Grant, the alters of Moon Knight have continued to serve Khonshu in their pursuit of stopping Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) from releasing Ammit's judgment upon the Earth. The quest to defeat the Egyptian god took a surprising turn more recently, though, as the series explored Moon Knight's mental health, multiple identities, and tragic backstory.

After most of Moon Knight episode 5's events occur in Marc's past and the Egyptian underworld, Moon Knight episode 6 delivers a surprising ending that encapsulates all the moving parts of the show's story. Marc Spector grapples with the death of Steven Grant and whether or not he wants to enjoy the afterlife without him. Due to his presumed death, Layla (May Calamawy) is put in a position to help save the world by releasing Khonshu from his imprisonment. Meanwhile, Arthur Harrow successfully releases Ammit and brings judgment upon humanity and the Egyptian gods that kept Ammit locked away for so long.

All of this allows Moon Knight's ending to blend the exploration of Marc and Steven's relationship with an action-packed battle of the gods. Through it all, the show primarily focuses on wrapping up its main story instead of setting up a more significant piece of the MCU's Phase 4 future. In that respect, Moon Knight episode 6 stays true to its previous episodes, as the MCU series has a surprisingly limited number of connections to the larger universe. Here's Moon Knight's ending explained, including its post-credits scene and potential setup for Moon Knight's next adventure.

How Marc Spector Comes Back To Life

Moon Knight Ending Explained Marc Spector Alive

The turning point in Moon Knight season 1 came during episode 4 when Arthur Harrow seemingly killed Marc Spector after Khonshu's imprisonment. This led him and Steven Grant to explore a psychiatric hospital that was really the gateway to the Egyptian afterlife. Moon Knight episode 5 confirmed that Marc Spector died (again) and was now on his journey to enter the Fields of Reeds potentially. However, he is only granted access after Steven Grant dies in the sands of Duat. This is where audiences find Marc when Moon Knight episode 6 begins, but he quickly realizes that he doesn't want this peaceful existence without Steven. Marc decides to forgo this afterlife and find Steven in the hopes of bringing him back to life. It is only after they are both frozen by the sands of Duat with their hands touching their whole heart that they are both freed. This allows them to leave the Egyptian afterlife and Marc Spector to come back to life in the real world. Thanks to Layla releasing Khonshu, Marc can become Moon Knight once more, although now he and Steven live in harmony and equally serve the Egyptian moon god.

Layla Becomes The MCU's Second Egyptian Superhero

Moon Knight Ending Explained Layla Superhero Scarlet Scarab

Moon Knight's return to action sees him get some additional help from Layla, who becomes the MCU's second Egyptian superhero in Moon Knight's ending. After she helps free Khonshu and turns down his offer to become Moon Knight's Avatar, Layla realizes that the world needs more help to stop Ammit. This leads her to commune with Taweret and, temporarily, become her Avatar. Layla's bond with Taweret grants her new superpowers as she seemingly becomes the MCU's version of Scarlet Scarab. While the name is from Marvel Comics, Moon Knight reinvents the character through Layla. She gets a gold suit with bulletproof wings, granting her the ability to fly. As Scarlet Scarab, Layla assists Moon Knight in fighting Ammit. She previously says that this is a temporary arrangement with Taweret, but there is no definitive confirmation that Layla's time as a superhero in the MCU is over.

Ammit's Release & Defeat By Moon Knight Explained

Khonshu fighting Ammit in Moon Knight

After five episodes of build-up, Moon Knight episode 6 finally sees Arthur Harrow accomplish his goal of releasing Ammit. The Egyptian goddess reveals that she was imprisoned for nearly 2,000 years before this. She chooses Arthur Harrow to be her official Avatar because his scales are imbalanced due to what he'll do in the future serving her. Ammit's release in the Moon Knight ending kicks off a fight between her and Khonshu, including her potentially killing the rest of The Ennead's Avatars. While Ammit and Khonshu fight outside the Great Pyramid of Giza, Layla and Moon Knight battle Arthur Harrow, who has empowered his followers to judge humans. Each imbalanced soul allows Ammit to grow in size and power.

While Layla and Moon Knight are on the verge of being overpowered, Moon Knight teases a third alter once more when Marc Spector blacks out and regains control with the tides turned. Now that he has Arthur Harrow in his grasp, Marc takes him back to The Ennead's chamber to begin a ritual to trap Ammit. This is where Khonshu orders Moon Knight to kill Arthur/Ammit to ensure that they can't do any more harm in the future.

Marc Spector & Steven Grant Stop Serving Khonshu

Moon Knight Ending Explained Marc Spector Lose Powers

Moon Knight's ending includes a somewhat surprising moment on the surface, as Marc Spector and Steven Grant stop serving Khonshu. The moon god's call of Arthur Harrow's death makes him look like a hypocrite in Marc's eyes, as Khonshu wants them dead for something they could do in the future. While Arthur and Ammit already committed great evil, Marc is done being Khonshu's fist of vengeance. Khonshu grants Marc and Steven their request to stop serving the moon god's will. At this moment, they lose their Moon Knight powers once again. Moon Knight episode 6 adds some confusion to the matter by immediately showing Marc and Steven back in the psychiatric hospital that they know isn't real and then waking up in Steven's UK apartment. With two pet goldfish and easily balancing who is in control, Marc and Steven are ready to live in harmony - if they are given the opportunity.

Moon Knight's Post-Credits Introduce Jake Lockley

Moon Knight Ending Explained Jake Lockley Post Credits

In a first for the series, Moon Knight episode 6 includes a post-credits scene that dramatically changes things by introducing Jake Lockley. The show has repeatedly teased the presence of a third alter who is more violent than Marc Spector. Moon Knight episode 6's post-credits scene shows Jake Lockley picking up Arthur Harrow from a psychiatric hospital. Jake kills several employees to get Arthur out alive and throws him in a fancy cab with Khonshu seated in the back. Khonshu confirms that Jake Lockley is his Avatar now and the real reason that he wanted Marc Spector in the first place. Jake seemingly doesn't hesitate when the moon god allows him to kill Arthur Harrow, firing multiple shots inside the cab. While the shots themselves or aftermath are not shown, it certainly appears that Jake Lockley's ruthlessness is quickly proving to be beneficial for Khonshu in cleaning up loose ends.

Is Moon Knight's Hospital Real?

Moon Knight Ending Explained Post Credits Arthur Harrow Hospital

The Moon Knight post-credits scene might also be confusing for some due to the hospital setting. Arthur Harrow being a patient in a psychiatric hospital could raise suspicions that this is also a manifestation of the Egyptian afterlife and the higher plane of existence previously featured in the show. However, the crisp white aesthetic of the fake hospital is gone here, and that is one indication that Moon Knight's hospital is real in this instance. Jake Lockley taking Arthur Harrow outside of the building and seeing a city around them further illustrates that this is part of the ordinary world. This likely means that Marc Spector and Steven Grant admitted Harrow into the hospital following the conclusion of Moon Knight's ending battle. However, Khonshu wasn't ready to let him off that easy.

How Moon Knight Sets Up His MCU Future (& Season 2?)

Moon Knight Ending Explained Marc Spector MCU Future

Now that Moon Knight's ending has happened, it is understandable to think about what his MCU future looks like. The introduction of Jake Lockley as Moon Knight's third alter is a big deal that will further complicate Marc and Steven's relationship. It also points to another traumatic moment in their lives that resulted in creating the Jake Lockley identity. This could be explored in various MCU projects, but Moon Knight season 2 also seems like a much stronger possibility to happen now. The character is well-suited for the long-form storytelling that Disney+ provides. Beyond the Jake Lockley tease, Moon Knight's MCU future is wide open. However, since Marc is not currently serving Khonshu, that might mean that it will likely be a while before the superhero crosses over with other characters and properties.
