Like many of the other recent television series from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Moon Knight uses the superhero formula to explore weighty issues, especially since its main character suffers from dissociative personality disorder. Oscar Isaac brings a powerful intensity to his character, and so most of the series revolves around him and his tortured psychology.
However, a number of other characters also emerge as equally important parts of the drama, and so it is useful and worthwhile to examine them through the interpretive lens provided by the Enneagram Institute, in order to show just how richly developed they are.
Marc Spector - The Challenger
Marc Spector is, of course, the series’ main character, and the original personality. As is the case with many others who fall into the Challenger personality type, he is a very driven person. Having suffered some severe trauma in his youth, he is willing to confront those who have done evil.
At the same time, as he shows with Khonshu, he is also very willing and able to stand up to the gods themselves, even Khonshu, who he has long served as an avatar.
Steven Grant - The Helper
Steven Grant is one of the series’ most likable characters. From the moment he appears, he makes it clear that he is very much in the mold of a Helper. He is very demonstrative with his feelings and is generous with his time, even with those who might not deserve it (he is often a moderating influence on Marc’s more ruthless inclinations).
He is also something of a people-pleaser and often goes out of his way to avoid any kind of confrontation.
Moon Knight - The Investigator
As one of the most formidable heroes from the MCU, Moon Knight is responsible for being Khonshu’s avatar and fighting back against those who have done evil in the world. He demonstrates many of the most notable traits associated with the Investigator personality type, particularly in his ability to innovate and solve most problems very quickly.
At the same time, he also has that personality type’s secretiveness, which is why there is still very much about him that remains an enigma (from both the viewers and the characters).
Mr. Knight - The Loyalist
Given that he springs from the Steven Grant side of the personality, it’s not surprising that Mr. Knight is different from Moon Knight in terms of his temperament and how he deals with problems. He is as engaging as his fully human counterpart, capable of witty dialogue and banter.
However, he still shows some of the other personality traits associated with the Loyalist, particularly when it comes to being more anxious (and also responsible) than his Moon Knight counterpart.
Layla El-Faouly - The Achiever
There have been many great female characters in the MCU, and Layla is sure to be viewed as one of these. She is clearly of the Achiever personality type, as she is very driven and passionate in all of the things that she does.
She is very skilled at adapting to whatever situation gets thrown in her way, whether it’s Harrow shooting Marc (and temporarily killing him) or responding to the release of Ammit by offering herself up as a temporary avatar for the goddess Taweret.
Khonshu - The Individualist
As a god, Khonshu is one of the most powerful beings in the MCU, and he has no compunction about using that power however he sees fit. As an Individualist, he can, at times, be a bit self-absorbed, and he tends to believe that his way is the best way.
And, as he shows with his many confrontations with both Marc and Steven, he can be very temperamental at times, prone to outbursts of anger that sometimes undercut his own best efforts to do right by humanity.
Arthur Harrow - The Reformer
Ethan Hawke has starred in some great movies, so seeing him bring his talents to television made him a welcome addition to the Moon Knight cast. He brings a steely, passionate aura to Arthur Harrow, the man determined to return Ammit to the world and bend everyone to her will. He has all of the purposeful, principled approach common to the Reformer personality type, which is why he makes such an excellent prophet for the goddess.
Despite his passion, however, he also has that personality type’s ability to be self-controlled, which is why he is such a dangerous enemy.
Taweret - The Peacemaker
Unlike the other gods who appear in this show, Taweret seems to actually like humanity. She is kind and compassionate, and she seems to have a particular fondness for both Steven and Marc. As a result, she is clearly of the Peacemaker personality type. Like others who fall into this type, she is very reassuring and agreeable.
However, while she can at times be a bit complacent, she shows that there is more to her personality, particularly when she allows Layla to become her avatar.
Ammit - The Reformer
The goddess Ammit has more in common with Khonshu than he is willing to admit, particularly since she remains committed to ridding the world of injustice and evil. Like other Reformer personality types, she has a very principled view of the world, and this determines everything that she does.
And, like her servant Harrow, she is also very self-controlled, only using violence when she thinks that it will get her what she wants (as when she attacks Khonshu after he refuses to join her in her efforts).
Anton Mogart - The Enthusiast
Though he is a relatively minor character in the series, Anton Mogart nevertheless plays an important part, as he owns the sarcophagus that is essential to finding Ammit’s tomb. During his episode, he shows that he is very much in the mold of the Enthusiast.
He is spontaneous and versatile, which means that he is always a bit of a wild card in terms of his allegiance to others. Both Marc and Layla find this out when they go to him to try to see the sarcophagus, only to end up almost being killed by him.
