Marvel Studios' Moon Knight debuted on Disney+ as part of Phase 4, introducing the mythology of Ancient Egypt into the MCU. Premiering on March 30, 2022, Moon Knight marked the introduction of yet another new hero to the MCU, with Phase 4 establishing a new crop of characters in the wake of Avengers: Endgame and the end of the Infinity Saga. Excitement for Moon Knight to enter the MCU was high, and the series was finally announced in 2019, created by Jeremy Slater, with acclaimed directors including Mohamed Diab, Aaron Moorhead, and Justin Benson attached.

Debuting in Marvel Comics during 1975's Werewolf by Night #32, Moon Knight has been a staple of the more supernatural storylines in the comics ever since. In both the comics and the MCU, Moon Knight's human alter ego, Marc Spector, has dissociative identity disorder, meaning as well as being the avatar of the Egyptian God Khonshu, Spector also has a variety of alters to contend with. It's one of these alters who audiences are first introduced to in the MCU's Moon Knight, as Steven Grant is unwittingly pulled into a globe-trotting adventure, coming face-to-face with a number of brand-new MCU characters in the process.

Oscar Isaac takes the leading role in Moon Knight, portraying Marc Spector and his alters, Steven Grant and Jake Lockley. Spector was a mercenary and the original avatar for Khonshu, while Steven is a British gift shop employee at a museum who thinks he only suffers from issues with sleep. Jake Lockley is only seen in the final moments of Moon Knight and is revealed to be the true, murderous avatar of Khonshu. Moon Knight marks Oscar Isaac's MCU debut, though he previously portrayed Apocalypse in Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse, and has also appeared in projects such as Ex Machina, Dune, and the Star Wars franchise.

Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow

Legendary actor Ethan Hawke takes on the role of Moon Knight villain Arthur Harrow. Although based on the Marvel Comics character, the MCU's Harrow has been changed dramatically, giving him a much more prominent role as an avid follower of the Egyptian god Ammit, and, eventually her avatar. Best known for his work in Dead Poets Society, Richard Linklater's Before trilogy, and Boyhood, Moon Knight marks the first role in a comic book adaptation for the two-time Academy Award nominee.

May Calamawy as Layla El-Faouly, A.K.A. Scarlet Scarab

Best known for her roles in Together, Together and Ramy, rising star May Calamawy debuted in Moon Knight as Layla El-Faouly, Marc Spector's wife. In the MCU, Layla is an amalgamation of Marlene Alraune and the Scarlet Scarab in Marvel Comics, the latter of which she adopts as her superhero moniker when she becomes the avatar of Taweret, and the MCU's first Egyptian superhero. Calamawy has been reported to have a large role in the MCU's future, though it's currently unclear where she'll be returning, as Moon Knight season 2 hasn't yet been confirmed.

F. Murray Abraham as Khonshu

The Egyptian god Khonshu is voiced by F. Murray Abraham in Moon Knight, with the on-set performance being given by Karim El Hakim. Khonshu is an intimidating character, a rogue god who was cast out by the other members of the Ennead. Khonshu seeks to bring justice to those who do wrong, vowing to protect the travelers of the night, and transforms Marc Spector into Moon Knight in order for him to act as the "Fist of Khonshu." El Hakim is best known for his work as a cinematographer, while F. Murray Abraham has been a star of stage and screen since the 1950s.

The Egyptian Gods & Avatars

ennead in mcu moon knight

Moon Knight takes a huge amount of inspiration from Ancient Egyptian mythology, meaning this was the perfect place to introduce several new gods to the MCU, including Khonshu and the Egyptian Ennead. This group of gods typically consists of nine members who oversee all the other deities, but in the MCU, they've largely elected to stay out of human affairs - which causes a rift with Khonshu's active intervention in humanity. The Ennead were finally introduced in Moon Knight episode 3, "The Friendly Type."
