From manga to video games, Moon Knight is a character that has captured the imaginations of thousands of comic book fans, and it's a great time to look back on some of the most memorable appearances he has made in other media. Who knows, maybe the show might make a few references to these appearances in the shape of a hidden detail or easter egg?

Moon Knight Manga

Marvel is no stranger to licensing their iconic heroes into anime and manga. In perhaps one of his most obscure appearances, Moon Knight was once licensed for a series back in the 1970s by TOEI. According to Moon Knight author Doug Moench in the first Moon Knight Omnibus - a manga was serialized from 1979 to 1980 instead of the show.

Finding copies of this manga is a bit of a challenge, but the few excerpts from fans that show a fascinating tokusatsu-inspired look. His eyes and mouth are very distinct, and his general demeanor is more like a dashing rogue than Marc Spector’s more fractured identity in the Moon Knight comics.

Lego Marvel Superheroes

As expected of a series that goes out of its way to include even the most obscure characters, there was no way Moon Knight wasn’t going to be making an appearance in this hit video game series. Moon Knight doesn’t have a major role in the story, but just like every other hero, he is shown aiding the other heroes in the fight against Doctor Doom.

Moon Knight plays like fans would expect him to, with basic melee moves like kicks and punches. He also throws his iconic crescent moons as boomerangs for his ranged attack. If nothing else, this is a great way for players to feel like Batman in the Lego games.

Avengers Assemble

In this 2013 series, Moon Knight (voiced by Gideon Emery) makes his debut as one of the few potential Avengers recruits. Marc Spector’s first series appearance is brief, but it’s a shot that introduces many children to the character for the first time and lets old fans know Moon Knight’s finally making his animated debut.

Moon Knight’s second appearance is much more substantial. In this episode, Captain America, Black Widow, and Iron Man find themselves facing off against a mind-controlled Moon Knight. It’s a great showcase of how skilled Moon Knight really is when he manages to hold his own against three experienced Avengers.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Moon Knight is one of the several playable characters in the classic Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. He appears in the first game as an unlockable character (voiced by Nolan North) and a DLC character in the third game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order (voiced by Gideon Emery).

Moon Knight in the first game was regarded by many fans as one of the most efficient boss killers. His crowd control attacks were very handy against the waves of enemies Marvel Ultimate Alliance would often throw at the player, and his extreme attack does some great damage for how easy it is to spam.

Ultimate Marvel VS. Capcom 3

This is a bit of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment for many players, but Moon Knight does make an appearance in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Moon Knight appears among the members of the West Coast Avengers in Hawkeye’s ending in Arcade mode. Moon Knight has been an on-and-off member of the West Coast Avengers since the 1980s.

It’s great to see Marc with one of his integral teams for once, even if only for a little bit, in one of the best superhero-fighting games of all time. Some speculated that this would mean Moon Knight might make an appearance in a new Marvel vs. Capcom title, but as of 2022, there has been no word on that happening, sadly. For now, most gamers have satisfied themselves by playing the character through mods.

Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six

Moon Knight makes another appearance in Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six. In this holiday-themed episode, Moon Knight (voiced by Diedrich Bader) shows the fans an unexpectedly calmer version of the character. His appearance in this episode is much livelier than his Avengers Assemble appearance.

Viewers finally get to see more of Moon Knight’s iconic oddities that were only seen in the comics, such as his tendency to be mystic and talking about the moon without prompting. This version of Moon Knight is also much more submissive to the moon’s wills and gladly listens to its advice. In some ways, this Moon Knight might be the most emotionally stable.

Spider-Man (2017)

Moon Knight’s most recent animated appearance (voiced by Peter Giles) is in the episode “Vengeance of Venom.” In this version of his story, Marc Spector has left behind his Moon Knight identity after an incident got one of his loved ones killed. He now lives as a survivalist filled with cynicism and avoids most conflicts that don’t directly involve him.

It’s the first time we see a darker take on the character in animation. The first appearance was rather action-oriented and focused on his skills. His second appearance focused a lot on his oddities and humorous interactions with Spider-Man. This is the first time fans see him like he is in the comics. Bitter, haunted by his past, but nevertheless a good person at his very core.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Perhaps his most famous appearance outside of comic books, Moon Knight appears in the video game Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (voiced by Robin Atkin Downes). At this point in time, there were a lot of players who didn’t even know who Moon Knight was and had to look up some facts. The player meets Moon Knight around the second portion of the game after he assists Spider-Man in fighting off Kingpin’s tech goons.

Certain choices dictate whether or not the player gets to have Moon Knight appear in their game as an ally or not. He may be one of the more abrasive heroes you meet, but he still fights on the side of good. When Moon Knight, one of the grittiest Marvel antiheroes, starts telling the player off when they make black-suit choices, fans know that Peter’s gone off the deep end.
