Marvel’s most unusual duo, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, are making their comic book return ahead of the debut of their upcoming animated show. Marvel recently announced eight new series that will help define the future of the Marvel Universe, one of which was a new title promising the return of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, set to debut in February 2022.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur's roots go back to the legendary Jack Kirby. After a stint at DC in the early 70s, Jack would return to Marvel, creating the Eternals, Machine Man and an odd concept called Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur. Initially set during prehistoric times, the book was never a commercial success, but the characters developed a cult following. In 2015, the pair was revived by writer/artist Amy Reeder as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, which saw Moon Boy killed and Devil Dinosaur sent to the present time to avenge him. In the present, Dinosaur met Lunella Lafayette, the smartest person on Marvel’s Earth, surpassing even Tony Stark and Reed Richards. The two form a bond thanks to Lafayette’s Inhuman mental powers and would share many adventures together. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur was a critical success and an animated series is set to premiere on the Disney Channel in early 2022. To celebrate, Marvel is releasing an all-new title featuring their most unusual duo.

In a press release, Marvel unveiled eight new titles that will “shape the future of the Marvel Universe,” and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur was one of them. However, beyond the title and a February 2022 release date, no other details - such as the plot or the creative team - were provided. While not confirmed, it would make sense that the book will debut around the same time as the animated series.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur announcement

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is one of the nuttier concepts ever to come out of the House of Ideas and serves as a great example of how a publisher can take an already existing concept and give it a modern spin - and with resounding success. It was the fans' response that led to the animated series being commissioned in the first place.

With the characters likely to become even more popular thanks to the cartoon, now is the perfect time to capitalize and launch a new title featuring the pair. With no creative team having been announced, could Reeder be returning to the property? Or could it be someone working on the animated series? Only time will tell. Regardless, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur are back in a big way in a new series that plays heavily into Marvel’s 2022 plans.
