Comedy, as has been discussed ad nauseam in the past, is avery subjective. What makes one person explode into laughter could just as easily elicit a grimace of disgust from another. So nailing down the funniest film of all time is a tricky proposition. With so many films in contention for the title - and so many styles of comedy to consider - one film couldn't possibly be branded the most laugh-inducing cinematic work ever conceived. Or could it?

According to a new poll, Ranker has determined that 1975 British comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the funniest film ever made. More than 15,000 users weighed in with their picks, and over 373,000 votes were cast for 981 different films up for the top spot. The Zucker brothers' endlessly quotable Airplane! landed in second place, with The Hangover - the only film in the top 10 released within the last 20 years - in third.

Here's the top 1o, courtesy of Ranker:

1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

2. Airplane!

3. The Hangover

4. Blazing Saddles

5. Caddyshack

6. National Lampoon’s Animal House

7. Groundhog Day

8. Ghostbusters

9. Dumb and Dumber

10. Young Frankenstein

'Airplane!'

Considering that Monty Python and the Holy Grail is often considered not only the most revered film to come out of that particular comedic troupe but among the greatest comedies of all time, its ranking here isn't entirely surprising, as it usually appears on such lists along with other classic comedies such as Airplane!, Blazing Saddles and Caddyshack.

What is interesting is the fact that millennial voters - which listed The Hangover at number one - had Will Ferrell's Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy in second and the aforementioned Monty Python comedy in third. More recent comedies like Office Space and The 40-Year-Old Virgin finished off the top five, and though the fact that voters tended to select the films they grew up with (of course) isn't ground-breaking research, this new poll lends an insight into which recent comedies could go on to be regarded among the all-time greats as well how gender, location and age affect one's view on what is funny.

Surely, this is one of those topics where everyone has their own favorite comedy to champion. So what's your pick for the funniest film of all time? Sound off in the comments section below (and we promise not to call you "Shirley").
