Six alpha Titans exist in the MonsterVerse. Based on what’s known about the gigantic creatures that occupy Legendary’s MonsterVerse, more than one Titan is capable of reigning over the others. In fact, over a handful of them have stand out as alphas. In the lore of the MonsterVerse, the term refers to a creature capable of being the apex predator and the dominant force in the ecosystem.

This important aspect of the MonsterVerse was on full display in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In the movie, it was explained that of the different frequencies emitted by Titans, one in particular can be picked up as an alpha call. Of course, not all monsters in Godzilla’s world can give those off. Titans like Behemoth, Scylla, and Methuselah clearly aren’t alphas and operate like minions to other monsters instead. Rodan, who was courageous enough to challenge Ghidorah in King of the Monsters, may be one himself, but it’s hard to say for sure. Either way, though, the MonsterVerse has plenty of Titans who are most certainly worthy of alpha status. Here’s every Titan known to be an alpha in the MonsterVerse.

Ghidorah

Ghidorah in Godzilla King of the Monsters

Though not native to Earth or even the strongest creature on the planet, Ghidorah is indeed an alpha Titan in the cinematic world of Godzilla and Kong. After being woken up by the humans, Monster Zero sought to begin his reign by letting out an alpha call that awakened all the Titans in the MonsterVerse. Presumably, only alphas are capable of such feats. Following an easy victory over Rodan, Ghidorah assumed the role of alpha of the Titans. Whether it be because of the alpha frequency or the ease in which he took down Rodan, the other monsters in the vicinity were quick to recognize the three-headed alien invader as their new alpha.

Godzilla

It’s a no-brainer that a monster known as the King of the Monsters is an alpha Titan. After all, it makes sense that it would take one to beat the acting alpha – and that’s exactly what happened in Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ ending. By dethroning Ghidorah, Godzilla claimed the crown and in turn, acquired all of Ghidorah’s minions. Rodan, Behemoth, Methuselah, and the third MUTO bowing down to the winner of the fight was a moment where all four Titans essentially acknowledged that Godzilla – and one else – is the alpha of the Titans.

Kong

Kong in Godzilla vs Kong

Interestingly, at least one Titan heard Ghidorah’s call in King of the Monsters but chose not to answer it. In the movie’s novelization, it was stated that Kong was aware of Ghidorah, but the King of Skull Island simply had no interest in heeding the Titan’s call. That’s because Kong is an alpha in his own right. Kong isn’t as powerful as Godzilla (and may not be as strong as Ghidorah either) but he is one of the MonsterVerse’s alpha Titans. He was identified as such in Godzilla vs. Kong when he was described by Dr. Ilene Andrews as a “rival alpha” to Godzilla. This also partially accounts for Godzilla’s reasons for fighting him. It’s true that Godzilla and Kong’s ancestors fought each other in an ancient Titan War, but their shared history on its own doesn’t explain the fighting in the movie. Additionally, Godzilla understood that Kong was another alpha and needed to assert his dominance over his rival.

Of course, it was inevitable that two alpha Titans would clash at one point or another. Godzilla vs. Kong’s ending solved that problem by relocating Kong to the home of his ancestors. Now that Kong is no longer on the surface, he’s free to be the alpha of the Hollow Earth where he can lord over his own Titan minions.

MUTO Prime

Godzilla Aftershock MUTO Prime

There are more than three MUTOs in MonsterVerse canon. Introduced in King of the Monsters prequel graphic novel Godzilla: Aftershock, MUTO Prime is the most powerful member of her species. Similar to Ghidorah, MUTO Prime is an ancient rival of Godzilla. What sets her apart from Ghidorah is that unlike Monster Zero, she actually has confirmed kills on previous versions of Godzilla. Dagon, the Godzilla ancestor whose skeleton was found by Monarch in the beginning of the 2014 movie, was killed by MUTO Prime, as explained by Aftershock. As a Titan powerful enough to challenge (and beat) a Godzilla, there’s little doubt that MUTO Prime deserves to be counted as one of the few alpha Titans to have existed in the MonsterVerse.

Camazotz

Camazotz Titan from Godzilla vs Kong Prequel Comic (1)

Prior to the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, the MonsterVerse released a graphic novel that explained what Kong was up to before he was forced to leave Skull Island. Apparently, he and the Monarch scientists had to deal with Camazotz. Unbeknownst to Monarch at the time, Camazotz – a giant bat Titan –awakened offscreen by Ghidorah’s call in King of the Monsters. Prior to being aroused by Ghidorah, the creature was sleeping somewhere in the Hollow Earth tunnels. Upon awakening, the beast climbed up through the Hollow Earth entry point at Skull Island on a mission to fight Kong. Just as Godzilla did in Godzilla vs. Kong, Camazotz detected Kong and knew he was an alpha Titan. According to Dr. Houston Brooks, the monster attacked Kong in the interest of becoming the new MonsterVerse alpha. Had he succeeded, it stands to reason that he would have attracted the attention of Godzilla, who then would have had a completely different rival to remove from the board.

Tiamat

Tiamat in Godzilla Dominion

Godzilla: Dominion, a graphic novel that spotlights Gojira’s activities before his showdown with Kong, unveiled the MonsterVerse’s Tiamat, a creature who shares its name with a being from Babylonian mythology. In King of the Monsters, a monitor screen revealed the names of multiple Titans that had Monarch outposts built around them. 11 of these creatures, one of which being Tiamat, never actually appeared in the movie but did become active after Ghidorah’s call. While patrolling the Earth as the self-appointed alpha, Godzilla found an unusually challenging opponent in Tiamat, who occupied one of Godzilla’s old lairs. Shockingly, their underwater fight didn’t go Godzilla’s way. In order to win, he had to move the fight onto land where he was able to finally force Tiamat into submission. Tiamat’s ability to overpower Godzilla in the water and push the Titan to his limit strongly suggested that she’s an alpha in her own right. There aren’t many Titans capable of coming that close to beating Godzilla, much less in the water.
