Flying high on the critical and box-office success of Disney/Pixar’s latest masterpiece, UP director Pete Docter could easily be forgiven for taking some time off to revel in his achievement. Of course, taking breaks has never been popular at Pixar, so it’s no surprise to hear that Docter is already back at work on an all-but confirmed sequel to Disney/Pixar’s 2001 film, Monsters, Inc.
Slash Film, working off of information from Jim Hill, recently reported that buyers attending the 2009 Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas were treated to a preview session of Disney/Pixar’s upcoming features, one of which was Pete Docter’s Monsters, Inc. 2. It is important to note that a sequel has yet to be confirmed by Pixar, so this report should still be taken as speculative, but it is exciting news nonetheless.
While the cynic might decry Pixar for opting to produce another sequel instead of an original feature – the company already has Cars 2 and Toy Story 3 in the works – I actually think a sequel to Monsters, Inc. could be pretty good. Sure, the original was terrific and there’s probably no need for a sequel, but there was no need for a Toy Story sequel either and look at how good Toy Story 2 was.
Above all else, Pixar is interested in producing quality movies. Do you really think they won’t be able to come up with another great story for Sully and Mike? However, what I would really love to see is a sequel to The Incredibles. Of course, Brad Bird will be tied up for the next few years with his own non-Pixar projects, including the live-action film 1906, so perhaps an Incredibles sequel is still a little too far in the future to speculate about.
What do you think? Are you excited about a Monsters Inc. sequel, or do you think Pixar should stick to original features?
