It's true, Monster Hunter Rise will let players mount and even control the game’s wyverns, according to a new trailer for the upcoming game. Monster Hunter Rise is the first new game in the series to release on the Switch and introduces a new Wirebug mechanic that is seemingly the next evolution of the Clutch Claw from Monster Hunter: World. The new feature is one of the many new and different things that the next iteration of the long-running series is set to offer.

Aside from the Wirebug, another big feature that’s being introduced in Monster Hunter Rise is the new Palamute canine companion that can assist the player in their adventures. Much like the game’s fan-favorite Palico feline companions, the Palamute can also wear armor, wield weapons, and assist the player during combat. Players can also ride the Palamute as a mount, allowing for faster movement and climbing without using up stamina as well as sharpening weapons while moving.

During the recently concluded Monster Hunter Rise digital event, developer Capcom unveiled the new Wyvern Riding feature in a snippet it uploaded to Twitter. The new feature makes use of the aforementioned Wirebug mechanic to let players mount and control the game’s Wyverns like a puppeteer for a short period of time. Players will be able to ride a wyvern by dealing a certain amount of damage through either aerial attacks (from weapons like the dual blades or insect glaive) or what the game calls Silkbind attacks using the Wirebug. The trailer also mentioned using turf wars or endemic life to help make wyvern riding easier although it doesn’t go into detail on this.

Once players are able to ride a Wyvern, they’ll be able to control the monster’s movements (such as leaping and dodging) and attacks – including some of their special moves such as Tigrex’s rock-throwing attack. Players will also be able to force the Wyvern they're riding to charge into walls (which is similar to one of Monster Hunter: World’s Clutch Claw abilities) and consequently stun them for a time. Riding different monsters will most likely present slightly different mechanics and abilities depending on the species of Wyvern.

Those excited to try out the new Wyvern Riding feature won’t have to wait long as a demo for the game has been confirmed to be available on the Switch today. Those who don’t own a Switch will have to wait much longer though as a PC version of Monster Hunter Rise is expected to release later this year.
