The end of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story depicts Christopher Scarver killing Jeffrey Dahmer, but it's not entirely clear why the man murdered his fellow inmate. The Netflix Original series, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, details the life and crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer, one of America's most prolific serial killers. After being found guilty of 15 murders in January 1992 — and an additional murder charge in May of the same year — involving cannibalism and necrophilia, he was sentenced to 16 life sentences at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin.

On November 28, 1994, Dahmer was found on the floor of the prison gym bathroom, suffering from severe head wounds. He and fellow inmates Jesse Anderson and Christopher Scarver were left unsupervised during a cleaning detail, and during that time, Scarver beat both Dahmer and Anderson with a metal bar. Though both Dahmer and Anderson were discovered alive, they eventually succumbed to their injuries. Scarver later informed a prison guard that it was not premeditated, but that "God told me to do it." Some people believe the murders were actually racially motivated, as Scarver is a Black man and both Dahmer and Anderson were white and had victimized other Black men — but this was never confirmed.

Why Christopher Scarver Was In Prison With Jeffrey Dahmer

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Christopher Scarver suffered from alcoholism throughout his early life. After never receiving the full-time job as a carpenter that he was promised at the Wisconsin Conservation Corps, Scarver started to drink more heavily and began hearing voices and experiencing messianic delusions. On June 1, 1990, he went to the Wisconsin Conversation Corps training program office and held two men — John Feyen and Steve Lohman — at gunpoint in demand of money. After receiving $15 from Feyen, Scarver killed Lohman out of anger. Feyen fled the scene after writing him a check for another $3,000, surviving the attack. In 1992, Scarver was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Steve Lohman and was sent to the Columbia Correctional Institution.

On May 15, 1995, Christopher Scarver was sentenced to two additional life sentences for the murders of Jeffrey Dahmer and Jesse Anderson. Scarver bounced between prisons after the killings, ultimately ending up at the Centennial Correctional Facility in Canon City, Colorado. In 2015, more than two decades later, Scarver told the New York Post that he killed Dahmer out of an extreme repulsion of him and the way he mocked other prisoners during meals — additionally implying that the prison guards were involved, as they wanted him dead as badly as Scarver did. These days, at the age of 53, Scarver spends his time publishing poetry online and writing letters to his son.

The release of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has once again brought the controversy surrounding Scarver into the spotlight. After the murders, sentiment circulated that Scarver was a hero for his deeds, despite those involved in sentencing him warning against such thoughts. Others believe Scarver did a disservice to the world, as Dahmer deserved to suffer in prison for his crimes.
