A Monk revival movie with the original cast has been confirmed by Tony Shalhoub. The current Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star played the series' eponymous main character, former San Francisco homicide detective turned consultant and private detective Adrian Monk, during the show's original run from 2002 to 2009 on the USA Network. The police procedural also incorporated drama and comedic elements when focusing on the personal lives of its characters. Monk was critically acclaimed, winning eight Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe.

While speaking with Dr. Loubna Hassanieh on the web-based monthly event series Unheard Stories: Stories That Inspire, Shalhoub discussed the development of a feature film based on Monk. Shalhoub, shares that the upcoming film will be a 90-minute feature and will be produced for a streaming service rather than a theatrical release. The 69-year-old actor also confirmed that the new movie will be bringing many of the show's original characters back into the fold as well. Read his full quote below:

We're doing a Monk 90-minute movie for streaming, and we're going to start shooting that in May. It's Monk post-COVID, so he's in trouble. So we're bringing everybody back, all of the characters for a 90-minute streaming thing.

Peacock Confirms The Monk Movie

Since Shalhoub revealed the development of a Monk movie, Peacock has confirmed the project has been greenlit and will debut on the streaming service. Titled Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie, the film will follow the titular detective as he "returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved step-daughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding."

Everyone Who Could Return For The Monk Movie

Shalhoub details that the film will be about Monk post-COVID, which sets Monk up for some interesting moments considering the detective is known for his OCD and his 312 phobias, which include harmonicas, milk, messes, and enclosed spaces among other things. The movie is likely to feature these personal struggles as they were in the show, not only causing problems for Monk and the people around him but also aiding him in solving cases.

With Shalhoub stating the movie will be bringing back "all of the characters," the expectation is that the main cast will join Shalhoub on the set in May when production begins. This will hopefully include Ted Levine (who also famously played serial killer Buffalo Bill in Silence Of The Lambs) as Monk's pal Captain Leland Stottlemeyer and Jason Gray-Standford as Lieutenant Randy Disher, who moved to Summit, New Jersey in the series finale, where he became the chief of police.

Bitty Schram, who played Monk's first assistant Sharona Fleming, is also likely to return for the movie. She was a main cast member from season 1 to season 3 before making a return in the show's final season where it was revealed that she and Disher had moved in together in New Jersey, a plotline that could be explored in the film. Monk's second assistant, Traylor Howard, played by Natalie Teeger, could also return. Monk's cast has kept busy in the interim, but it will exciting for viewers to see them back in their familiar roles in the revival.
