Out of all the robbers on Netflix’s Money Heist, Tokyo is the most polarizing among fans. Some dislike her for her recklessness and impulsive decisions, while others adore her for her passion and dedication to the gang.

That said, Tokyo has changed a lot throughout the seasons of the show. Her journey from being a criminal on the run to a member of the group willing to give her all has a ton of twists and turns. She has grown and transformed with the rest of the robbers who have had to deal with stressful and unexpected situations in the Royal Mint and the Bank of Spain.

Season 1

Tokyo looks up in Money Heist.

When Tokyo is first introduced in season 1, she’s already wanted by the police for a prior crime. She’s betrayed by her mother who works with law enforcement to try and trap her into coming home. With nowhere to go, Tokyo accepts the Professor’s invitation to join an ambitious heist. She portrays herself as a strong and independent person, often acting overconfident and wearing a smug expression.

Even during their training in Toledo, Tokyo shows viewers that she’s not one of the smartest characters in Money Heist. She sneaks out with Denver to go to a street party, putting the entire group at risk. This recklessness continues in the Royal Mint where Tokyo gets in trouble for shooting at the police. Her budding relationship with Rio also causes problems. At one point, a heated argument with Rio distracts Tokyo, which allows a hostage to steal the young hacker’s phone and snap a photo of him, further endangering everyone in the heist. The first season highlights how careless and self-absorbed Tokyo can be, often acting without thinking and prioritizing her emotions over the safety of the group.

Season 2

In season 2, Tokyo shows that she can be even more rash than anyone else in the group. Despite Berlin’s assurances about Sergio’s wellbeing, she breaks another rule by stealing a television to watch news about the Professor’s capture. She defies Berlin again after this, mercilessly smashing his life-saving medicine and almost killing him by playing Russian roulette. When Berlin takes control again, he kicks Tokyo out of the Mint in a dramatic fashion, tying her to a cart and pushing it outside.

The Professor finds a way to rescue her on the way to jail, but instead of fleeing as she should have, Tokyo stages a gripping re-entrance into the Mint. Tokyo drives through a hail of gunfire right into the building, causing Moscow to get shot in the process. This is the first time Tokyo shows remorse, as Moscow had previously warned her that her thoughtless actions would cause someone to get killed one day. Tokyo’s hot-headedness is further emphasized in this season, but she begins to show signs of regret about her actions. Her lack of trust in the Professor puts everyone’s lives at risk, as it often causes her to deviate from the plan. Fans were likely hoping that at this point, she has learned her lesson about being too reckless, given how Berlin's needless suffering and Moscow's death.

Season 3

Tokyo looks at someone while standing outside in Money Heist.

After the events of season 2, the robbers run off with millions and travel to different parts of the world to avoid detection. Rio and Tokyo run away together to an island where they spend their days enjoying paradise. Tokyo isn’t satisfied with this life, though; despite being surrounded by trees and the beach, she wants more. She convinces a heartbroken Rio that she needs to spend time in the city, but the young hacker can’t help but call her when she’s away. The call is intercepted and Rio is taken and tortured by the CNI.

The robbers would have never infiltrated the Bank of Spain if it wasn’t for Tokyo and Rio’s mistake. Inside the bank, when Palermo loses contact with the Professor, he wants to shoot at the incoming army, but Tokyo uncharacteristically stops him and says that Sergio would want them to wait and delay the enemy. After all their efforts, Tokyo’s reunion with Rio becomes disastrous when he breaks up with her. Season 3 is also when Tokyo says one of her best quotes on the show – “Love is a good reason for everything to fall apart,” which might be why she inflicts pain on other members as Rio hurt her. She drunkenly insults others and causes trouble. The only thing that snaps her out of her childish tantrum is Nairobi’s unexpected critical injury from a sniper. The season shows that Tokyo hasn’t completely grown out of her immature ways. Her dissatisfaction with a quiet life with Rio forces everyone to sacrifice their wealth and safety. She does have that moment with Palermo where she chooses to trust in the Professor, likely remembering how he saved her life during the first heist. That said, her irresponsible reaction to her breakup with Rio caused her to become a liability instead of a helpful member of the gang.

Season 4

Everyone is distressed at the start of season 4. They had just declared war on Money Heist's law enforcement characters, and Nairobi is bleeding out and fighting for her life in the other room. When Palermo refuses to send Nairobi outside to get medical treatment, Tokyo stages a coup d’état and takes control of the gang. Palermo ends up convincing her to keep Nairobi in the bank anyway, but she has to do the complicated surgery with the help of a doctor from Pakistan.

A flashback reveals that Tokyo once asked the Professor to choose her to lead the heist, which is quickly contrasted with his present anger with her about the coup. This rage dissipates when Tokyo is able to help Sergio deduce that Lisbon isn’t actually dead. She lays low until Gandía escapes and manages to hold her hostage in the panic room, prompting the group to work together to free her. This season underscores Tokyo’s attachment to her crew, which is evident in her tireless efforts to save Nairobi. Fans get a better understanding of the good intentions behind Tokyo's actions. She begins to shift the focus from herself to trying to help her group. While she still manages to get in trouble with Gandía, it’s not her fault that she’s victimized by the aggressive soldier.

Season 5

Tokyo raising her hand with a rock 'n' roll salute as she looks back towards someone in Money Heist Season 5.

In season 5, viewers finally learn about why Tokyo was running away from the police when the Professor first met her. Several flashbacks show bits and pieces of Tokyo’s tumultuous past with René. According to Tokyo, René was the great love of her life who was taken away because of her own selfishness. She wasn’t satisfied with robbing small stores with him, as she wanted to escape poverty by robbing a bank. René is killed in their first major heist and Tokyo is forced to abandon his dead body on the street.

Meanwhile, in the Bank of Spain, a team of elite soldiers is infiltrating the building and the robbers have a difficult time holding them back. Tokyo is her positive, witty, and playful self, but unfortunately, she is soon injured by gunfire from the soldiers, so she cannot escape down the vent with her friends. Rio manages to drill a hole on the floor from below it and he holds Tokyo’s hand through it. She’s fatally shot, but before drawing her last breath, she reveals that she has grenades under her vest and takes down Gandía and some soldiers with her. It’s a heartbreaking moment that draws attention to how much Tokyo values her crew. Most fans likely never expected her to die at this point, as she leaves an important question about Money Heist's next season – who will be the new narrator? Tokyo's narration of the last moments before her own death is jarring, especially when she turns and talks to Rio about living many lives. It’s a poignant and painful moment that, in a lot of ways, redeems Tokyo in the eyes of many viewers. In the end, she wanted nothing more than to save her friends and reassure Rio that it will be okay.
