Netflix has ordered a spin-off series of Money Heist about the character of Berlin. The Spanish crime drama tells the story of a group of would-be heisters brought together by a mysterious criminal mastermind known as "The Professor" (Álvaro Morte). Actor Pedro Alonso starred as "Berlin," a terminally-ill jewel thief whose real identity is Andrés de Fonollosa. The plot involves the group of criminals, each with a particular set of skills, participating in an ambitious attempt to steal hundreds of millions of euros from the Royal Mint of Spain.

The series rights for Money Heist were acquired by Netflix in 2017 from the Spanish network Antena 3. With them came the decision to re-cut the original 15 episodes into 22 and release them in two parts, with part one in December 2017 and part two in April 2018. However, Money Heist turned out to be a huge success with international audiences, becoming the most-watched foreign-language ever on the streaming platform in 2018; only recently being outdone by Squid Game. In July 2020, the final Money Heist season 5 was confirmed to be in the works, with it being released in two five-episode volumes on September 3 and December 3, respectively.

With the final episodes of Money Heist season 5 releasing on December 3, it was announced on the La Casa de Papel Twitter account (the original Spanish title of the show) that a prequel of the show, Berlin, would hit screens in 2023, with Alonso returning to reprise his role. With the heroic, sacrificial death of the character in Money Heist season 2, as well as the illness that threatened to shorten the character's life, Berlin will likely be an origin story. As of yet, no other announcements have been made regarding the plot, or if any other characters in the series will be returning. The teaser trailer can be viewed here:

Despite the lack of information provided from the teaser, there are plenty of clues to help with speculation about the new Berlin spinoff. As fans of the show will know, Berlin had an interesting family history. Most notable is the relationship he has with The Professor, his boss, who was also revealed to be his half-brother in Money Heist season 2. Given their connection, it wouldn't be a total surprise if Álvaro Morte makes a return in the new Berlin-focussed series.

What's more, Martín Berrote, also known as Palermo, appeared in flashbacks in Money Heist alongside The Professor and Berlin, time-stamped as five years ago in Italy. In one of these flashbacks, Berlin and Palermo share a kiss that could provide a rich backstory for the new drama to delve further into, giving further justification as to why he chose a relationship with Tatiana over Palermo. Still, with five episodes left of Money Heist season 5 for fans to enjoy, perhaps these final instalments will provide further clues as to the fan-favorite character's backstory before he gets his own solo outing.
