The cast announcement for the Money Heist prequel series Berlin reveals the title character's new team. Money Heist is a crime drama series following a diverse group of Spaniards who rob the Royal Mint, then the Bank of Spain, over the course of five action-packed seasons. It originally premiered on the Spanish network Antena 3 before being picked up by Netflix, who co-produced the series for the rest of its run, until its final set of episodes on December 3, 2021. Money Heist was a smash success for the streaming service, breaking viewership records for a non-English language show.
Because of its popularity, it was only natural that the Money Heist franchise would expand beyond the bounds of its core series. Earlier this year, Netflix premiered the reboot spinoff Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area, but it is also in development on Berlin, a prequel series following the standout Money Heist character of the same name. Berlin - as played by Pedro Alonso - was one of the masterminds of both heists, though he often caused friction with the rest of the group due to his frequently amoral methods. The prequel series will explore the heists he pulled off before ever joining the team in Money Heist season 1.
Per THR, the Berlin cast has been officially announced ahead of the show's production start date. The series, which will shoot in both Madrid and Paris, will begin principal photography in France on October 3. The new team around Berlin will include Michelle Jenner as tech genius Keila, Tristán Ulloa as a professor and Berlin's advisor Damián, Begoña Vargas as the unpredictable Cameron, Julio Peña Fernández as the loyal Roi, and Joel Sánchez as the tough guy Bruce.
Where You Might Have Seen the Berlin Cast
The new cast members of Berlin have largely made a name for themselves in Spain, so many U.S. viewers may not be familiar with them before tuning in. However, many of them have appeared in projects that are prominent for various English-speaking audiences. This includes Jenner, who held a role in Pedro Almodóvar's 2016 feature Julieta, and Fernández, who plays Ares in the Netflix young adult romance Through My Window, which will be receiving two sequels. Ulloa has also made appearances in both Narcos and Terminator: Dark Fate.
Money Heist viewers know that Berlin is the code name of Andrés de Fonollosa, as everyone on the team in Money Heist took on city names as their monikers in order to protect their identities. It is currently unclear if this will also be the case in Berlin, or if this series will follow the character as Andrés before he takes on the mantle of Berlin. If the characters will be adopting city names, however, viewers will likely come to know this new cast as an entirely new set of names that haven't been announced yet.
