The hit CBS sitcom Mom has been canceled after eight seasons and will air its series finale in May. Following its debut in 2013, Mom quickly became a success for CBS. Created by Chuck Lorre, Mom centers on dysfunctional mother/daughter duo Christy (Anna Faris) and Bonnie Plunkett (Allison Janney), who navigate life’s hurdles as single mothers while struggling with sobriety. Hailed for its powerhouse performances, Mom has received praise for doling out hilarious moments while tackling topical issues. Last year, Mom announced that Faris would exit the sitcom ahead of season 8. Now, it appears the Janney-centered sitcom is coming to an end.
Per Deadline, Mom will conclude at the end of its current eighth season. Scheduled to air its series finale on Thursday, May 6, Mom is coming to an end six months after the departure of Faris. Speaking on the show ending with season 8, Lorre stated, “For the past eight years, we’ve had the great honor to bring these wonderful characters to life, sharing their struggles and triumphs with millions of viewers each week. From the beginning, we set out to tell stories about recovery from alcoholism and addiction that are rarely portrayed in a network comedy series.”
Mom became a staple comedy sitcom for CBS over its eight seasons and consistently pulled in steady viewership. Indeed, the beloved sitcom offered realistic characters and family-centered scenarios for viewers to relate to while showcasing Janney and Faris’ potent chemistry and comedic talent. Of course, all good things must come to an end. Ideally, Faris could return to offer a proper sendoff to Mom and allow the dynamic between Bonnie and Christy to shine on screen one last time.
