MODOK star Patton Oswalt reacts to the cancellation of the Hulu Marvel series after one season. The stop-motion animated series, which was co-created by Oswalt and Jordan Blum, premiered on the streaming service on May 21, 2021. It was a wacky series exploring the titular supervillain M.O.D.O.K. aka Mental/Mobile/Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing (Oswalt) attempting to strike the proper work-life balance after losing his company AIM in the midst of a mid-life crisis. The series also featured the voices of Aimee Garcia, Melissa Fumero, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Beck Bennett, Jon Daly, Sam Richardson, and Ben Schwartz, who also holds a major voice role as Sonic in the Sonic the Hedgehog films.

The show's 10-episode first season was well-received by critics, nabbing an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Disney+'s stranglehold on Marvel-related television projects grew even stronger throughout the year, as they released hit after hit, including the live-action series WandaVisionThe Falcon and the Winter SoldierLoki, and Hawkeye, as well as the animated series What If...?, which was recently referenced in the MCU proper during a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There hasn't been much room for Marvel series on other platforms to gain a foothold, and MODOK was canceled by Hulu earlier this week, with its sister series Hit-Monkey expected to follow.

On his official Twitter account, Oswalt reacted to the disappointing news. He quote tweeted a Deadline article about the cancellation and said "*sigh* oh well." Although he is disappointed, he celebrated the opportunity to work with "the best writers" and "a dream voice cast" and play around in a particularly fun corner of the Marvel universe. Check out his Tweet below:

Despite the cancellation of MODOK, Oswalt isn't exactly hurting for upcoming projects. For one thing, the actor will be providing the voice of Matthew the Raven in Netflix's upcoming live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman comics. He will also be appearing in the upcoming animated film MEAD and Manhunt, a series depicting the hunt for the assassin of Abraham Lincoln, in which he will star opposite Lili Taylor as Mary Todd Lincoln and Hamish Linklater as Abraham Lincoln.

However, it's obviously still a huge disappointment to him - as well as the fans - that MODOK was canceled. The series was refreshingly bizarre, as it wasn't beholden to the constraints of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shows that odd and idiosyncratic don't typically survive long in the entertainment marketplace regardless, though, so people who loved it should consider themselves very lucky they were able to have it even for the short time they did.
