Warning: this article contains spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania! The rear-view shot of MODOK in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania gets explained by director Peyton Reed. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania might be facing divisive reception — common lately for the Marvel Cinematic Universe — however, the movie's exploration of the zany Quantum Realm and characteristic Ant-Man franchise humor has mostly been praised. One particular scene with Corey Stoll's MODOK generated a lot of chatter, with the movie's director now revealing how the moment came to be.

Speaking with Yahoo Entertainment UK, Reed described the process of getting MODOK's rear-view shot just right for the movie.

The director went on to detail how surreal it was that one of the notes given to the VFX artists of the MCU's Quantum Realm adventure movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was to show "a little bit more of [MODOK's] butt crack." Check out the full quote below:

"That visual effects shot where we show it was something that struck us as very funny, this quick version and sort of grotesque. And I remember with every visual effect shot in the movie, you get the shot back from the vendor and you analyze it and give notes, and I’m gonna admit to you here in front of everybody that one of my notes in that shot was like, ‘Oh, that’s really great, but you need to see a little bit more of his butt crack in this.’ That was an actual note given that everyone agreed with in the room and what you see in the movie is where we landed. So, I appreciate you asking about that.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's MODOK Was Nearly Perfect

Corey Stoll as Darren Cross in Ant-Man and as Modok in Ant-Man & The Wasp Quantumania

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was primarily marketed as the big MCU arrival of the new franchise-stretching villain Kang the Conqueror. While Jonathan Majors' Kang was certainly one of the better parts of the movie, showing how menacing he can be in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, another villain was also brought to life in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Ant-Man's Yellowjacket actor Stoll returned as the comic book villain MODOK for the final movie in the trilogy. MODOK's appearance was explained well in the movie, connecting both Ant-Man and Quantumania nicely.

First teased in the background of the Disney+ series Loki with a giant Yellowjacket helmet appearing at the location known as the Void — a place at the end of time where the Time Variance Authority sends pruned objects and beings — Stoll fully debuted as MODOK in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The MCU's MODOK came to be after Stoll's Darren Cross got shrunk to the Quantum Realm in 2015's Ant-Man, with the process drastically affecting the character's body — which explains the Loki Easter egg of the enormous Yellowjacket helmet. While audiences and critics disagree on Quantumania's quality, MODOK stands as one of the feature's shining points.

Despite changing the character's comic book origins — with scientist George Tarleton gone in favor of Darren Cross — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's take on MODOK got his personality from the comics perfectly recreated in the big screen. MODOK also looked like he was ripped straight from the comics, with the VFX team of the movie clearly having fun with the character visually. Stoll's performance made MODOK pathetic, deadly, funny, and endearing all at the same time. The only thing that made MODOK's role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania less than perfect was the choice to have him die — as MODOK's MCU origin hinted at a Marvel future to behold.
