Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players who logged on over the weekend hoping for a double XP bonus were disappointed to find they were only making the normal amount of progress, which some players claim was intentional. Modern Warfare runs double XP events fairly regularly, giving players a chance to level up at a faster rate.

It’s an important time for Modern Warfare, with many fans expecting big changes coming on the horizon. Several months after the launch of the battle royale Warzone mode, players are settling into a familiar rhythm, but one that’s expected to be upended by rumored changes coming to the map. On the standard multiplayer side, season four has brought recent changes like new maps, an unlockable new operator. The most recent update also introduced the Rytec AMR sniper rifle, which can be unlocked with a quickscope challenge in multiplayer.

With so many new additions to Modern Warfare and impending updates to look forward to, Activision clearly would have liked to have a lot of satisfied players over the July 4th weekend. The weekend was meant to have a double XP bonus for players, rewarding them for spending time in the game. What happened instead was either a technical mishap or an intentional trick played on fans, depending on the source. Whatever the cause, players are reportedly only receiving the normal amount of XP for playing, and users in the Modern Warfare subreddit seem to have coalesced around the idea that it was intentional. Reddit user Radeni posted a thread calling the weekend “fake” and claiming that base XP had been halved to cheat players out of their bonus, but later edited the post to say that it was most likely unintentional. By that point, the thread was already full of comments from players blaming Activision of intentionally misleading them about the event.

As of Monday, neither Infinity Ward nor Activision has commented on the bungled double XP weekend. With the event scheduled to end on Tuesday, a patch to fix the problem at this point would be unlikely and unhelpful. Some players have suggested that a rescheduled double XP weekend to make up for it could be in order.

While there’s no evidence that Activision intentionally sabotaged Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s double XP weekend, it was still a letdown for fans. Some of the more colorful replies in the Reddit thread may be going a bit far, but it’s still important especially for companies of Activision’s size to address the concerns of the community and make things right when they don’t deliver on their promises.
