During the week of Summer Game Fest, Activision released an underwhelming reveal trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which serves as a direct sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare rather than a remake of the eponymous game that was released way back in 2009. Due to the fact that the upcoming new installment in the Call of Duty series bears the same title as a decade-old game, there’s often confusion as to how to address the new Modern Warfare 2, which is even being trolled by fans for that particular reason.
Similarities between the new Modern Warfare 2 and its older namesake are indeed quite comical. Much like how the 2009 title came out after World at War, the upcoming Call of Duty entry is preceded by another WWII installment, Vanguard. Unlike World at War, however, Vanguard has seen mixed responses, meeting a much less positive reception from critics and players alike. Activision believes that the reason for that might be the WWII setting itself, which probably won’t be revisited by the series for quite a while. In that regard, Modern Warfare 2 may already be primed for success due to its return to the present-day era, and the fact that it’s being developed by the franchise’s signature studio, Infinity Ward. However, whether it can best CoD: Vanguard's poor sales remains to be seen.
The Call of Duty YouTube channel released a special reveal trailer prior to Summer Game Fest, showing off cinematic in-game footage from the upcoming campaign but skimping on actual gameplay footage. While many fans are excited by intriguing teases like the apparent return of classic Call of Duty map Highrise, the absence of a proper gameplay reveal has left others largely underwhelmed. More footage of the game is expected to be shown at Summer Game Fest on June 9th, and this will hopefully provide a more significant look at Modern Warfare 2.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II World Reveal Trailer
In the absence of gameplay footage, the cinematic action shown in the trailer doesn’t differ much from the Call of Duty gunplay fans are used to seeing in cinematics throughout the franchise's history. Interestingly, Activision refers to the upcoming game as the most advanced Call of Duty experience ever, though it's hard to gauge exactly what this means without seeing the game in action. Modern Warfare 2 probably needs a more in-depth demonstration to live up to the title of the most advanced game in the series, and this is expected to happen this June.
Judging by the reveal trailer, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 might deliver the experience players have been hoping for since the previous Call of Duty title heavily underperformed. It’s not the best-kept secret that the community prefers the present-day era with all the contemporary weapons, gadgets, and perks gamers can use, which could make Modern Warfare 2 a hit. While Modern Warfare 2’s story campaign is intriguing to say the least, it’s the multiplayer portion, along with the potential Warzone 2 integration, that players are likely most looking forward to learning more about.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is scheduled for release on October 28, 2022.
