It’s not hard to see why Modern Family is one of the most successful and popular sitcoms in recent memory. There is an honesty, and sweetness, to the show that’s rather hard to find in the contemporary television landscape, which seems to be dominated by cynicism. The characters on this show somehow manage to be both believable and outlandish, and it’s precisely the balance between these two poles that makes them such a pleasure to watch.
It’s also a lot of fun to speculate which one someone should date, particularly by thinking about them through the lens of the zodiac.
Aries - Dylan
Dylan is, of course, Haley’s husband (and, before that, her on-again, off-again boyfriend). He’s one of the show’s more lovable secondary characters, mainly because, despite his dim-wittedness, he seems to have a kind heart and a genuine love for Haley and her family.
It’s precisely this charisma that is likely to make him a good match for the Aries, who is a sign that often tends to have a very cheerful personality.
Taurus - Jay
In a show that is all about the changing nature of modern society, Jay is the representative of old-fashioned values. He’s a bit stubborn at times, and while he usually gives it his all, he sometimes finds it hard to change and adapt to the new mores of 21st-century life.
However, he is very loyal and loving to his family, and these are traits that the Taurus will appreciate in him (and they’ll probably admire his stubbornness, which is also a trait of the bull).
Gemini - Gloria
The thing about Geminis is that they are one of those signs that can show a different side of themselves, depending on who they’re talking to. This makes them a good match for Gloria.
Perhaps more than any of the other characters, she truly has the ability to change how she behaves, especially when it comes to soothing Jay’s ego (and everyone knows how touchy Jay can be about certain things).
Cancer - Cam
Cam and Mitchell are, in many ways, a marriage of opposites. While Mitchell is (with some exceptions) the logical one, Cam is one who is much more inclined to indulge in his emotions.
This sometimes gets him into trouble, because it also means that he’s not always very good at seeing things outside of his own perspective. At the same time, he is definitely very loving and supportive, and this is something that the Cancer will also appreciate in a partner.
Leo - Haley
As the eldest child of Claire and Phil, Haley has to really bear the burden of their expectations, but it’s clear that she isn’t quite the person that they want her to be. There’s no question, though, that she does want to be the center of attention, both for her parents and basically everyone else in her life.
The Leo will love that about her (because Leos always love attention), even if they might also get a little jealous of her attempts to hog the spotlight.
Virgo - Alex
Alex is about as different from Haley as it is possible to be. While her elder sister doesn’t seem to really care about studying and responsibilities, Alex fixates incessantly on trying to control almost every aspect of her life.
While this means that she’s successful in a lot of her pursuits, it does sometimes pose its own challenges, particularly when it comes to her emotions (which she sometimes has a difficult time processing).
Libra - Manny
In the series, Alex is matched by intelligence only by Manny (though, to be fair, he has a better sense of style). Manny is a deeply sensitive young man, very much in touch with his feelings. This leads to more than a few altercations with Jay, who doesn’t always understand his stepson.
However, in some important ways, Manny is the one responsible for maintaining balance in the household, and this is what makes him a good match for the Libra.
Scorpio - Gloria
Even in a show known for its large personalities, Gloria is something else. While it’s clear that she and Jay love one another very much, they have very different personalities, and this sometimes leads to various forms of conflict.
Gloria, for her part, has a strong sense of what is right, and she also has a bit of edge. It’s that little bit of edginess, in fact, that’s likely to make her a good match for a Scorpio as well as a Gemini.
Sagittarius - Claire
It’s hard not to love Claire. As absolutely whacky as she can be sometimes, she has a very good heart, and she clearly cares very deeply about her family, particularly her husband and her three children.
However, she does have a tendency to be just a bit unstable, and this leads her to make some rather questionable choices sometimes. However, a Sagittarius would appreciate this aspect of Claire’s character.
Capricorn - Mitchell
Mitchell is one of those people who really likes things done a certain way, and he doesn’t always respond with grace when things don’t go as planned. As a result, he is more than a bit high-strung, and he tends to freak out about things that other people would take in stride.
While this makes him sort of an odd match for Cam, it does mean that he would be a good fit for a Capricorn, who would appreciate his adherence to certain rules.
Aquarius - Luke
Luke is a bit of a mystery, both to his own family and to the audience. He’s lovable and goofy and sometimes seems a bit dim, but there’s also both an intelligence and wisdom to him, though it’s often buried so deep that it’s hard to see on the surface.
The Aquarius is, of course, one of the most enigmatic signs in the zodiac, and it’s likely that they’ll find quite a lot to appreciate in Luke.
Pisces - Phil
Dear Phil. The guy is just one of the sweetest men around him, and his deep and genuine love for his wife and children is one of the highlights of the series. He’s also a man who is very much in touch with his feelings and isn’t afraid to express them.
This makes him an ideal match for the Pisces which, of all of the signs in the zodiac, seems to have the most nuanced appreciation of emotions and how to deal with them.
