Between Claire and Phil, Gloria and Jay, Mitchell and Cameron, there are some amazing individuals and relationships on Modern Family. Each household has its strengths and weaknesses, and throughout 11 seasons, fans have seen each family go through its ups and downs. And while nobody is perfect, these couples are perfect together.

However, there are a few instances of how toxic Cam can be. Is he really the lovable and theatrical uncle, husband, and father so many people think he is, or is he dramatic, whiny, and selfish? He has put himself in some pretty outrageous situations for the sake of looking a certain way or to gain attention, which did not end up being a good look for him.

Updated on July 20th, 2022, by Lynn Gibbs: Cameron Tucker was one of the more beloved characters on Modern Family but he often let his dramatic side get the best of him. While he was constantly surrounded by good friends and family, he often left his husband out to dry and was caught lying on more occasions than not. Because of Cam's sense of humor, he was seen as one of Modern Family's more likable characters, but there were times when his toxic traits got the better of him and he took advantage of those around him.

When He Teamed Up With DeDe Behind Mitchell's Back

In 'Mother!', DeDe dropped by Cam and Mitch's house unexpectedly. As Modern Family fans know, DeDe wasn't around much and lived in Canada with her boyfriend, but when the relationship fell apart, she went home for comfort.

It's in this episode that Mitchell learned that Cam and his mother had been emailing for years and that she has subtly manipulated Cam to manipulate Mitchell. Keeping a secret relationship with a problematic mother-in-law, and then implementing her desires in a household was a low blow to Mitchell. It was one of the more annoying things Cameron had done.

Cam Made Mitch Do His Dirty Work When Something Better Came Up

One of the saddest things about Mitchell is that he's often pushed around by those with stronger personalities — including his sister and husband. In one episode, Cam tied himself to a tree in the park that the city was going to cut down because it was special to his time with Lily.

Mitchell was against this idea and judged him for it but when Cam got called to be a stand-in for a local production of the show Cats, he wanted to save the tree and be in the play. Cam begged Mitch to take his place with the tree, which he did, but this was typical of their relationship. Whenever something better came along, Cam took advantage of it, disregarding Mitch and Lily.

A Wedding Topper Gone Wrong

There were plenty of sweet moments throughout Mitch and Cam's wedding. It was the planning of the wedding that caused more speedbumps than anything.

One of those speedbumps was when Cam's dad widdled the couple a cake topper that looked just like them. While Cam looked rugged and handsome, Mitch thought he was portrayed far too feminine and unlike himself. Mitch hated the way he looked on the cake topper but Cameron didn't take Mitch's feelings into consideration. He only viewed it as a gift from his dad.

Fizbo In Paris

In season 11, most of the family went to Paris to celebrate a new accomplishment for Jay. Instead of using the trip to be a romantic time away with Mitchell, Cameron viewed it as a chance to be a real street performer as his clown alter-ego, Fizbo.

Mitch wanted to roam the streets of Paris with his husband and enjoy fine dining but Cameron preferred performing as a clown instead. It was only when his plan failed that he realized he should have spent more time with his husband than on something that didn't truly matter to him.

When He Was Mad At Lily's Relationship With Mitchell

Cam could be quite possessive over his daughter Lily. Even though he loved his husband, Cam hated when Lily preferred Mitchell over him and wasn't even fond of Gloria taking her out for girls day. It didn't make sense for Cam to be so jealous of Mitchell.

Cam made it known that he was insecure about Lily not having a mother, but for him to be upset with Mitchell for his relationship with their daughter was incredibly upsetting. In season 4, Lily wanted to pretend to get married to Mitchell, and Cam had a meltdown because his daughter wanted to spend more time with Mitchell. He was a stay-at-home dad for a long time but he should have been happy that his daughter had a great relationship with both parents.

He Had A Run-Away Suitcase Packed And Ready

When Lily entered kindergarten, Cam lost sight of himself and his direction in life. Without a job or anything to do until Lily got home, he started acting out. The problem was that any time Mitchell brought up the idea of him getting a job, Cam reacted harshly.

In 'Snip,' Mitchell once again tried to encourage Cam to work but it blew up in his face, and he learned that Cam had a packed suitcase in the closet for emergencies. Knowing Cam was ready to leave his family at a moment's notice was highly disconcerting for Mitchell and Lily. As likable as a character as Cam was, this was one of his more toxic moments.

He Took Mitchell's Shine Away

It wasn't often when Mitchell outshined Cam. Due to Cam's outgoing and bubbly personality, he was seen as the fun one in comparison to Mitchell. However, when there were a few chances for Mitchell to have his moment in the spotlight, Cam couldn't accept it. He became greedy and jealous of his husband.

An example is when Mitchell had a chance of having his case on the news. Cam swooped in with his football jargon and made the journalist more interested in his story than his husband's. Mitch and Cam shared some funny stories about their lives but this wasn't one of them.

Is He Still Obsessed With His Exes?

Cameron was very open about his past issues with his exes. Viewers saw how he reacted to his ex-boyfriend Keifth when he showed up at a family party. Cameron wanted to get back at Keifth for leaving him so many years prior and tried to make him jealous throughout the episode.

They even shared a special moment towards the end that forced Mitchell to separate them. Cam did the same thing with his former high school crush (and his sister's former boyfriend), Bo Johnson. And it didn't stop there. Cam was flattered when he thought Mitchell's assistant had a crush on him and spent the entire episode trying to prove it to Mitchell.

Cam's Refusal To Work

There was nothing wrong with Cam not wanting to work because he loved being a homemaker but there came a time when it wasn't benefiting him like it used to.

When he wanted to be, Cam could be very persuasive and inspiring. Working with the football team and at the school was the perfect fit for him but unfortunately, it took him a long time to see that. Instead of admitting that he wanted a job, he accused Mitchell of thinking he was a free-loader when all Mitchell was trying to do was be a good partner. Mitch and Cam had their moments of being one of the best Modern Family couples but this wasn't it.

He Knowingly Placed Lily In A Racist Commercial

Cam's love for theatrics took him too far in this episode. He had the opportunity to put Lily in a commercial because the casting director was looking for Asian babies. However, Mitchell thought Lily was far too young to do something like that and thought the idea wasn't the right move.

Instead of compromising, Cameron lied to Mitch and signed her up anyway. Mitchell had to show up on set to prove to Cameron how bad of an idea it was, especially how racist the commercial ended up being. Cameron didn't see his point until the very last minute.

The Issue Of Squatters

When Cameron and Mitchell rented out their upstairs unit, Cameron became transfixed on two men who moved in and never moved out. They paid Cameron in cash to stay a little longer and then never ended up leaving. However, Mitchell thought they left because Cameron never told him otherwise.

Having strangers live upstairs without paying is doing a disservice to his own personal finances and his trust in his family. Cam did the same thing yet again when a member of his football team moved in with him. He never bothered talking to Mitchell or his daughter about it. Cam had moments of being the main character but his lying nature tainted his reputation.

The Entire 'Farm Strong' Episode

As hilarious as 'Farm Strong' was, it was a real eye-opener for Cameron and his connection with his family. He learned that people held back from telling him things because of his reactions and that people weren't as fond of him as he once thought.

Cam became very emotional and ended up crying in the bathroom, but the feelings of his family had to be heard for things to change. Cam wound up apologizing to his family for his behavior and wanted to do better but he didn't change that much after this episode.

His Controlling Nature

Everyone knew how controlling the Pritchetts were, but Cam was controlling in his way. He got mad at Gloria and Lily for having fun without him, he didn't tell Mitchell when he had extra money (even though Mitchell paid for a majority of their lifestyle), he became petty with Claire for borrowing his Tupperware, and he wouldn't let Mitchell see Lady Gaga in concert because he was sick.

It's unfortunate but Cameron was controlling and got upset when things didn't go his way or he wasn't the popular one in the room. Cam was a great man with many redeemable qualities, but his toxic personality shined brightly.
