Whether watching Phil try to sell houses or hang out with his kids or try to get his father-in-law Jay's approval yet again, Phil fluctuates between maturity and silliness on a regular basis. While sometimes he could make grown-up decisions, there are many examples of storylines when he acted very young. But no matter what wacky scenario Phil found himself in, he always cracked audiences up.

Grown Adult: Knew It Was Time To Let Go Of The Family Car

Phil enjoyed giving advice often and while he didn't always get it right, he knew when to be sentimental, and it was charming how emotional he got about getting a new car.

In the season 2 episode "The Old Wagon," Phil and Claire said goodbye to their family car, and Phil wanted everyone to remember all the happy times that they experienced. This was a time when he could be mature, as he knew that it was time to let it go, and he also wanted to properly move on by talking about memories.

Immature: Lied About Being Married To Gloria

There are many awkward examples of Phil having feelings for Gloria and things got even weirder at the end of season 2.

Phil hated Glen back in college, and when he saw him at the mall, he wasn't honest about his life. Instead of telling the truth about being married to Claire and raising three kids with her, Phil lied and said he was married to Gloria. It was petty to care about what someone from his past thought and odd that he wouldn't tell the truth.

Grown Adult: Felt Going Technology-Free Was A Good Idea

Season 2's "Unplugged" episode saw the Dunphys wondering if they could talk to each other better if they stopped using technology for a while. This was very mature and grown-up of Phil, as many people wouldn't be able to live without their cell phones or laptops for even a few hours.

Sometimes Phil just wanted to be the life of the party, but every once in a while, he and Claire came up with smart ideas. Phil knew that the family was spending too much time with their devices and it was something that he cared about.

Immature: Wanted To Race Claire

In the season 1 episode "Run for Your Wife," it was time to go back to school, and Claire was pleased to have time to read and relax. Phil didn't understand that she craved alone time and he wanted to race her.

This was definitely a silly and immature thing to do, as he didn't need to make it a competition. Claire could tell that Phil was upset about the kids returning to school and so she allowed the race to happen. If Phil had been more of a grown-up here, he would have given Claire her space.

Grown Adult: Visited His Father After Learning He Wasn't Doing Well

In season 11, Phil was told that his dad, Frank, could have dementia, and he went to Florida to spend some time with him. In a heartbreaking storyline, the father and son got to connect once more before Frank died.

Frank's death was the most tragic on the show and Phil handled this sad situation with maturity. He knew that this was going to be a difficult trip but he went anyway, wanting to help his dad and be there for him.

Immature: Loved Dylan No Matter What

Dylan and Phil talking on Modern Family

Dylan and Haley weren't always nice to each other and yet this was definitely Haley's longest relationship. While Claire was nervous about this romance from the start, as she didn't want Haley to grow up too fast or get hurt, Phil loved Dylan immediately.

While it was nice that Phil supported his daughter, he was pretty immature around Dylan. He hung onto his every word, wanted Dylan to think that he was cool, and never saw any of his flaws. Claire could tell that Dylan was nice but ditzy and didn't really apply himself, but Phil thought the world of his daughter's boyfriend when he should have been a bit more critical.

Grown Adult: Sold The House Next Door To New Neighbors Who Claire Didn't Like

The Dunphy's next door neighors on Modern Family

In season 6, Phil had to sell the house next door, and he sold it to new neighbors who Claire would really rather not live beside. They seemed very intense and a little rebellious, and no one was sure how this would go.

Phil did the mature, adult thing by selling them the house, as he would be in trouble if he stopped someone from putting in an offer on a property he was in charge of.

Immature: Used Haley's Twins For His Own Gain

Haley could be seen as the show's main character, especially since her arc involved becoming a young mother. In the season 11 episode "Perfect Pairs," Phil decided to use Haley and Dylan's twins to make his magic act more popular.

While the rest of the family did the same thing for their own reasons, Phil was still in the wrong. He should have been the mature adult in the situation and set a better example.

Grown Adult: Accepted That His Kids Had Grown Up

Fans definitely got hit in the feels in the series finale of Modern Family as, after 11 seasons, it was tough to leave these characters behind. Phil showed great maturity when he accepted that his children were grown up and wanted them to move out.

Phil and Claire felt ready to be empty nesters, which was something that they had struggled with previously, and when they found out that all three kids were going to live on their own, they were happy that everyone was doing well. It was very grown-up of Phil to embrace this stage of his life and know that they would always remain a close family.

Immature: Ignored How Sick He Felt At Disneyland

Phil and Luke had a close relationship and in season 3, when the family went to Disneyland, Phil wanted to be the cool dad who could go on every ride with his son.

Even though Phil was feeling really sick, he ignored it and kept going with Luke, making the situation worse. Phil should have been open and honest with Luke, saying that he wasn't feeling well and that while he wanted to have fun with him, maybe they could find something a bit easier to do together.
