ABC's Modern Family aired 11 years ago and gained the status of a classic sitcom. It falls in the mockumentary genre, making the audience both cry and laugh. Fans loved the Dunphys, Tucker-Pritchetts, and the Delgado-Pritchett clan for all their weirdness and relatability. The audience saw the kids grow up, the parents become grandparents and grandparents become parents in front of their eyes.
However, in the 11 seasons that the show ran for, some of the storylines were totally despised by the viewers. Let’s revisit these 10 most hated storylines.
Haley And Andy Break Up
Modern Family followed one of the worst paths possible when they put loads of time into developing the storyline of Haley and Andy and then killed it out of nowhere. The audience felt betrayed as they did not get any return on their emotional investment.
There was a huge divide amongst audience members when it came to Team Andy and Team Dylan. Team Andy felt that Haley and Andy’s relationship was one of the most memorable storylines in the history of the show and it ended without the anticipated conclusion.
Claire Leaving The Closet Business
The audience disliked that Claire left the closet business, even though she desperately wanted to work after being stay-at-home for so long. The audience shook their heads over this storyline, as it came without warning.
Fans were glued to their screens watching the several episodes in which Claire was shown working hard to prove her qualifications to Jay. Even a little foreshadowing of the storyline may have helped the audience in accepting this storyline.
Grownup Manny Being A Borderline Creep
The creepiness of Manny is directly proportional to his aging in the show. The audience endeared the "wise beyond years" child Manny during the early seasons of the show.
However, grown-up Manny became an annoying, pretentious, borderline creep. Manny remained a character that many felt did not flesh out well.
Alex Going Off To College
Although this storyline was an obvious next step in Alex's life and the audience did expect this, it was handled poorly by the writers. When Alex left the house to go to college, she didn’t feel like the part of the family anymore.
There was a lack of character development for Alex and the writers did a poor job handling her character, including this milestone.
Mundane Mitch And Cam Storylines
In most of the episodes, Mitch and Cam's storylines went one of two ways. First, they fought over wanting to do something and the other refusing it, resulting in the pair fighting throughout the episode.
Second, one of them does the thing anyway and spends the whole episode hiding the truth from the other. This as just too repetitive for the audience.
Alex And Ben's Relationship
There was no reason for Alex and Ben's relationship. The beginning indicated they connected over their overbearing mothers. The audience thought that this would be a "one episode thing," but the unjustified relationship hung around too long for most people's taste. Alex and Ben lacked chemistry and their association seemed like a relationship of convenience.
It was a creepy relationship that only served as a way of releasing the weird feelings Alex had inside her. A segment of the audience also opined that Alex really did not even like Ben that much.
Haley’s Pregnancy
Viewers had all kinds of reactions to the big reveal of Haley’s pregnancy. Some felt that she was too young to get pregnant. The audience could not understand the reason for this creative choice, as they felt there was no need for this storyline. Many felt it did not contribute much to Haley’s character development or even moving the story forward.
Another section of the audience simply did not like the storyline, as Dylan happened to be the father, but they were rooting for Andy's comeback.
Pam Messing With Cam And Mitch's Relationship
An unnecessary character, which was overused by the writer and simply annoyed the viewers, Pam was introduced as Cam's older sister in season 5. Pam's character received a lot of hate from the audience when she stayed past her welcome with her pregnancy and moving in with Cam and Mitchell.
The audience disliked her act of joining hands with Cam to manipulate Mitch. She went on to blackmail Mitch, who helped in raising her child.
Cam And Mitch's Search For A Tenant For The Upstairs Apartment
Mitch and Cam's upstairs neighbor passes away, so they decide to use the opportunity for extra income. The audience sees several groups as potential tenants, but all of them meet the same fate, which is the unnecessary prying by Cameron.
This got quickly repetitive and the audience got irritated watching the same storyline play out over and over again.
Non-Existent Lily
Lily, as she grew up, became the typical teenage daughter of Mitch and Cam. She had very little screen time and was only brought on-screen to deliver small amounts of dialogue.
She was not popular with the audience who felt that her character only served the purpose of showing gay American parents who adopted a South-Asian kid. Viewers would have loved to have seen a more creative use of this character.
