Haley Dunphy was just a freshman in high school when viewers met her in the first season of Modern Family. She was young, naive, and would do anything to maintain her popularity. Over the years, Haley transformed into a young woman who tried to get a handle on adult life. However, she had just as many downfalls as glow-ups throughout the show's 11 seasons.

As brilliant as Haley was (when she applied herself), she also had storylines that set her character back instead of moving forward. Unlike her sister Alex who had a plan for her life, Haley flew by the seat of her designer pants, which caused some eyebrow-raising moments in her storyline.

Best: Preparing For Her Fashion Interview

There was nothing more exciting than seeing Haley prepare for a job interview and actually be excited about work. With Andy’s help, the two former friends prepared each other for their respective interviews and it was the first time viewers saw Haley prepare for her future.

What’s better is that she ended up getting the job. She stood her ground, fought for an interview, and wowed her employer with her honesty. The job wasn’t necessarily perfect for Haley but it was a great stepping stone for her future.

Worst: The Dylan Storyline

It was all fun and games at the beginning of Haley and Dylan’s relationship but once they got older, Haley outgrew the relationship. When they were together, they were trying to hold on to the past. They wanted to feel what they felt at 16.

Dylan and Haley got back together time and time again because they were lonely. Their relationship was cute at first but towards the end of the series, they both didn’t offer each other anything new. Fans agree that Haley was her best self when she had someone like Andy, who rooted for her ambitions.

Best: Creating Her Own Brand

After Haley got kicked out of college, she contemplated what she was going to do with her life. Claire assured her that she would go to community college and get a job in the meantime. Haley, of course, didn't always tell her parents everything, so Phil and Claire assumed Haley wasn't doing anything productive.

In reality, Haley was taking initiative and getting her ducks in a row. She created a fashion blog that had over 50,000 subscribers and she created a concierge service with beautiful women. Haley proved her company reputable when she brought her ladies to one of Phil's open houses to liven up the party and bring in more clientele.

Worst: Her Intelligence

Haley Modern Family

Haley's ditziness was apparent when she was with her brainiac sister Alex. There was nothing wrong with Haley's frustration with school or her inability to understand simple things, but the line in the sand is how her intelligence appears to dwindle.

She was at her brightest when she was dating Andy and Rainer but slowly went downhill again after the fact. Her sad character arc was hard to watch for some fans.

Best: Reevaluativing Her Relationship With Rainer

When He Accidentally Set Rainer Up With His Daughter

It was odd when Haley started dating Rainer the weatherman because he was so much older than her and friends with her dad. However, being with an older man allowed Haley to mature in ways she didn't even realize. With Rainer having a teenage daughter, Haley quickly learned that she would be a mother figure in this young girl's life and that she had to get her act together.

Once Rainer proposed, the smartest thing Haley ever did was turn him down. She admitted they were totally different people and on two different journeys in life. They loved each other but Haley wasn't ready to settle down in the same way Rainer was. This was a monumental step for her.

Worst: Relying Heavily On Her Parents For George & Poppy

When Haley became pregnant, she was terrified. The pregnancy wasn't planned, she didn't know how to tell her parents, she and Dylan weren't married, and Haley was just getting in a good rhythm at work. She wasn't ready for babies. However, she went through with the pregnancy because she loved Dylan and her parents assured her they would help her.

Haley took their promise a little too literally. Claire and Phil admitted that they were exhausted from how much they took care of Haley's twins. The late-night feedings, the early mornings, the babysitting... It proved that Haley was still not ready to be independent by how much she relied on her family.

Best: The Growth With Alex

Haley Modern Family

Haley and Alex butted heads when they were younger. Both were completely different and had contrasting interests. Likewise, they were embarrassed by each other at school.

As the two grew up, little glimmers of a possible friendship began to appear. Haley and Alex were talking without arguing, Alex was finally wearing clothes that Haley approved of, and Alex wanted to help Haley when she was in her time of need with Dylan. Seeing these two women come together was a big moment for the Dunphy clan.

Worst: Getting Kicked Out Of College

Was there anything more upsetting than when Haley got kicked out of college? It was a blessing that Haley even got into school to begin with. The fact that she took it for granted was so typical Haley, but fans wished it wasn't that way. Viewers wanted Haley to prove them wrong, graduate, and walk away with a degree.

Instead, Haley was there for a couple of months, skipped class, made out with her RA, and got in trouble for underage drinking and attacking a police officer. Going to college was Haley's chance at a new beginning and she totally blew it.

Best: Becoming An Inspiring Working Mom

Many fans hated that Haley got pregnant —especially with Dylan's babies — but having her twins was Haley's decision to make. Luckily, she ended up being on the ball with her kids and focused on giving them a loving upbringing.

With a little help from Claire, Haley also went back to work. Claire wanted Haley to continue on with the job she loved because it would make her a more successful person and a great role model for her children.

Worst: Becoming A Mother

Haley Modern Family

Speaking of pregnancy, even Sarah Hyland, the actress who played Haley, disagreed with her character arcModern Family viewers wanted to see Haley succeed as an independent woman without other stressors. Her getting pregnant was very stereotypical of her character and almost expected. What would have been more surprising was if Haley became a successful career woman like her mother.
